Fines going up!
Posted by Mix 94.5 Friday 29 February, 2008 09:48 AM
The news team here at Mix have confirmed that fines are going up for people caught speeding and talking on mobiles while driving. We want to know how you feel about this?
- Is this latest development going to curb the road toll?
- Are there other ways the government could address the rising road toll?
- Will it deter you from speeding and/or talking on the mobile
Have your say. Make a difference.

I think it's about time that something is done about the mad drivers in WA. Mad drivers and I do come accross alot of them make it unsafe for all other drivers. I think it's time people are more responsible when behind the wheel. The roads aren't made for racing.

The multinovas are always hidden behind bushes and more often than not in areas where it is really difficult to know what the speed limit actually is. Try going along Fremantle Road from Singleton to Mandurah, the speed limit changes every 5 minutes, I'm so busy checking on speed limit signs to ensure I am doing the correct speed limit I feel I'm a danger on the road! Obviously if you are a local you get used to the various speed limits along that Clayton's freeway but for the rest of us who only get down to Mandurah on the weekends it's a nightmare of a road. It's revenue raising along that area and there is NO doubt about that at all!!

They should treble all fines. Remember fines are only there for those doing the wrong thing. It is voluntary to do wrong and get have to pay a fine. Don't do wrong, don't pay a fine - simple. If you don't want to be fined, don't do wrong and make the roads a safer place to be, and if you do do wrong and get fined, STOP B.....Y MOANING.

The revenue raised goes towards out lovely new railway systems with inadequate parking. .......
The WA Govt need more money to Over spend on WA Growth... ie on stuff that wont get used properly and then charge an arm and a leg for the public to use it?.
What do our future children have to look forward to. Our children will become illogical and stuff up even further in the generations to come.....

I am all for fines being appropriate to the infringement however what is revenue raising and what is a true fine? What study is being used that says mobile phones are dangerous when driving? Are there any studies that say they are not dangerous?? Why are CB radios and walkie talkies ok to use while driving? What about all these Drive through Coffee shops and fast food outlets; How come it is ok to drive with boiling coffee but not use a phone? And how come nobody seems to be fined for driving 10 and 20 klms under the speed limit, the people that do this are just as dangerous as they cause congestion.

I don't think the fines do much good when people on motorbikes get away with speeding anyway. My ex was pulled up for speeding and was let get away with it more than once. He and his perth street bike buddies do anything up to 180k but still don't get caught what is that.

They should be higher - how long is it since the law was introduced people should automatically put their seatbelts on by now. It should be triple for both driver and passengers it is both their responability to put them on

Try work as a bricklayer , pain and suffering every day (back , hands, heat , all the other adverse conditions we put up with. 40% decrease in pay in the last 12 months no air conditioners (try just standing in, just a 35 degree day on a concrete slab!) stop winging overpaid over holidayed , teachers. I challenge any one of you to work with me for just one week to see how well off you really are!

Does not matter how high fines it will not stop people speeding and talking on mobile phones while driving. We have so many adverts and public campaigns on how to behave and whats socailly acceptable.
It all comes down to an individual to expect responsible for ones actions and what the consequences will be. Do you think adverts are working? No No No
I catch a bus in the mornings and while waiting at the bus stop the amount of people who speed, take risks and talk on mobiles is still the same.
Its just total arrogance until that is knocked out of people the war on speeding and curbing the road toll will never be won.
Many think death and injury only happens to some one else
Higher fines will not work.

Kerry, You obviosly have no idea what you are talking about. Teachers do not only work 180 days in the year. Nor do they just work when students are in the school. I personally know teachers and have been a teacher myself. When the students have their term holidays, the teachers are reviewing their lesson plans, marking students work and making preparations for the next term. During the long break over December and January the teachers are making preparations for the new school year. They certainly are not just baby sitters. Do you work Kerry, do you have leave if you have been in a job for twelve months and don't you get paid for it?

I don't mind if fines go up, tough bikkies for the idiots that cop the fines all the time, if they weren't breaking the road rules then they wouldn't be getting a hefty fine.
I have no sympathy for the idiots that I see on the road each day, speeding, using mobile phones while driving, running red lights and hooning around. Don't do the crime and you wont be affected by the fine rises.
I have been driving for 28 years and have never had to pay a fine because I learnt my road rules properly. So stop your whinging and whining.

Fines going up, so what! If you don't do the crime you won't have to pay the fine

AREN'T YOU ALL SICK OF THOSE HIGH PAID TEACHERS??
Their hefty salaries are driving up taxes, and they only work nine or ten months a year! It's time we put things in perspective and pay them for what they do... baby-sit!
We can get that for less than minimum wage. That is right. I would give them $3.00 dollars an hour and only the hours they worked, not any of that silly planning time.
That would be $19.50 a day (7:45 AM to 4:00 PM with 45 min. off for lunch).
Each parent should pay $19.50 a day for these teachers to baby-sit their children.
Now, how many do they teach in a day... maybe 30? So that's 19.5 X 30 = $585.00 a day. However, remember they only work 180 days a year! I am not going to pay them for any vacations.
Let's see . . . that's $585 x 180 = $105,300 per year.
(Hold on! My calculator must need batteries!)
What about those special teachers and the ones with master's degrees? Well, we could pay them minimum wage just to be fair, round it off to $7.00 an hour. That would be $7 times 6-1/2 hours times 30 children times 180 days =$245,700.00 per year.
Wait a minute, there is something wrong here!
There sure is, duh!
Make a teacher smile; send this to someone who appreciates teachers!
(Average teacher salary $50,000/180 days = $277 per day/30 students = $9.23/6.5 hours = $1.42 per hour per student.) Very inexpensive babysitter and they even educate your kids! Crazy!

As someone who had it drumed, during Definsive Driver training, into my thick youthful skull that everytime I got behind the wheel of a vehicle I was in control of a potentially LETHAL WEAPON, one that is just as lethal as a firearm loaded with the safety catch off, I'm over the complaints about fines and the police.
If people won't take responsiblity for their own actions maybe hurting the hip pocket will!

Oh yes, fines going up are great for the governments coffers... but have fines every proven to be a solution in terms of the attitude of Perth drivers - or drivers anywhere for that matter? NO! If they spent some of these additional funds on driver education that would be a start but no, its already budgeted for the by the Carpenter fat cats! Drivers need to change their attitude, find some consideration for their fellow man, both on and off the road... this coupled with increased and improved driver education would go a long way to improving the situation on the roads. Even the coppers don't think that increasing the fines would work but they have to do what they are told so don't blame them! Driving instructors take note - it is your responsibility to teach our young people that consideratin of fellow drivers is JUST as important as knowing how to drive a car!
