A duck is a duck!

2008 is the year of many things. It's the Year Of The Frog; it's the International Year Of The Potato (IYP); it's the Year Of Languages; the Year Of Sanitation and the Year Of Planet Earth. It's the Year Of The Reef; it's the Year Of The Scout and of course 2008 is the Chinese Year Of The Rat, which just slightly overlapped with the Year of The Pig!
My question is, amid this congested clamour of commemoration, have we ever considered an International Year Of "Rediscovering Common Sense"?
Remember that? Remember a time of common sense? Not just having some yourself, but when (think right back now) when common sense was considered, along with logic, a fairly decent principle to live by .. and to govern by .. and to legislate by..
So why was it so popular? Probably because the fact is - if it looks like a duck, and it walks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck, then IT'S A DUCK!!
- When was common sense replaced with this nanny state mentality that has invaded our lives?
- What do you think?
- And how do we go about bringing common sense back into vogue?
Have your say.

Obituary of Common Sense
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in beaurocratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
Knowing when to come in out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the Worm; Life isn't always fair; and, Maybe it was My Fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound, financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year- old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Tylenol, sun lotion or a band-aid to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.
He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim.
Not many attended his funeral because so few realised he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

I agree with Lisa and Judi try taking responsibility for your own actions and live by this and instill into your kids so the next generation has less of the blame mentality.

Couldn't agree more Lisa. Unfortunately, due to the influx of SO many ... for lack of better word... STUPID people in Australia, "common sense" has so much lower value than what it used to. Also, this is Australia people, learn the language, customs, culture and systems, we're multicultural by default, but don't abuse that.

Lisa, surely this should be a year,if not THE YEAR, that we should be promoting harmony and well being regardless of colour or creed.
A happy community would surely be a safe community, similar to the day's I vaguely remember

Don't know if my first comment went through Lisa but I agree with you, it is time people started taking responsibility for their own actions and stop blaming everyone else. How do we fix it, no idea other than making sure I live by that standard and trying to instill that on anyone I know.

I agree Lisa, it is time people started taking resposibility for their own actions instead of trying to blame everyone else for their mistakes, how do we fix it? Sorry but I have no idea, all I can do is take resposibility for my actions and try to convince others I know to do the same.

I totally agree with you Lisa

The sad fact is that there isn't enough common sense left in society to see the sense in your suggestion
