Daylight Saving... Your Say?

Posted by Mix 94.5 Wednesday 26 March, 2008 12:45 PM

Daylight saving is almost over for another year. Whilst it seems that many of you have enjoyed the extra hour of sunlight in the day, there are many calls as well to scrap Daylight Savings altogether.

We'd love to hear what you think:

  • Have you utilised the extra hour of sunlight?
  • Has it disrupted your daily schedule?
  • Has the government got it right? Should it still be dark at 7am?
  • Which way will you be voting when the referendum comes around?
  • Do you think that despite the referendum, the government may still implement Daylight Savings?

Here's your chance to have your say on daylight saving!!!

1 hour DLS is never going to make a difference to a baker that starts at 1-4am. It just makes it harder to gets to sleep. The number of times I heard the excuse used that DLS would mean a baker wouldn't have to start in the dark all year. What a stupid comment.

NQ. Has it disrupted your daily schedule?
A. Absolutly, for people like me who are out of bed at 4.00am 6 days a week, going to bed before the sun goes down is just not normal. I suffer from fatigue with DLS.
I totally agree and say
o to daylight saving -

Why does Perth have to be like everyone else ....why not do daylight savings in winter...so we do have anextra hour in the evening to do other activities...we get enought daylight in summer in the evenings and for people like myself who exercise in the early hours it is horrible to walk in darkness in summer...in winter it will be dark either way....

Q. Have you utilised the extra hour of sunlight?
A. Monday – Friday, Even in one-income households, the day’s most labor-intensive period for the full or part-time homemaker, falls between 5 and 8 pm. Cooking, cleaning, kids homework, bath time, bed.

Q. Has it disrupted your daily schedule?
A. Absolutly, for people like me who are out of bed at 4.00am 6 days a week, going to bed before the sun goes down is just not normal. I suffer from fatigue with DLS.

Q. Has the government got it right? Should it still be dark at 7am?
A. Stumbling around in the dark for 6 months of year is bad enough but with DLS it’s now 10 months of the year.

Q. Which way will you be voting when the referendum comes around?
A. Just like I did in 1975, 1984 and 1992…. NO!!!

Q. Do you think that despite the referendum, the government may still implement Daylight Savings?
A. This arogant Government thinks it can dismiss the will of the people and will attempt to slam it through regardless. I will not be voting Labour come the election.

It’s simply a case of taking daylight from one end of the day and sticking it at the other. No thought is ever given to people who might prefer some light in the morning: Daylight Saving supporters - You know that “extra hour of light” you so cherish in the evening? That’s my hour that I cherish on summer mornings that’s been taken away from me and given to you.

Posted by Greg Thursday 10 April, 2008 03:51 PM

I have just been reading all the posts on day light saving
I cant believe what Im hearing that peoples sleep patterns are interupted that seems more silly to me than the old excuses daylight saving fades my curtains, the cows get confused (as far as im aware cows dont wear watches) as for your children not sleeping while it is still light havent you ever heard of curtains (you know the ones that fade during daylight saving) or blinds that you can pull down and there you go darkness so childern can sleep.
Daylight saving does not mean that we have any less hours in the day still 24 as far as im aware and we sleep 8 to 10 of those so what the problem with people saying daylight saving robs you of sleep you can still sleep your 8 hours or what ever and hey shift workers sleep during the day if they have to. Anyway I hope they keep daylight saving I loved it

Sammi, You miss my point. Being worldly is not the issue. I too have contacts with a lot of people around the world. That has no bearing on our DLS. My point is that the people from around the world, that have now made WA home now, know the benefits of DLS. WA-way ahead??. Almost every time I need something, I have to wait for it to be ordered in from interstate, or overseas. Besides I do respect your opinion, but please don't make irrelevant excuses. I like DLS saving for the health/financial benefits, and the opporunity to spend more daylight time with my family. And, I AM A MORNING PERSON.

Posted by O J Thursday 10 April, 2008 07:28 AM

OJ this blog is not about what people do in winter so failing to mention my exercise routine in winter did not seem necessary. As for not being wordly again you are very assuming, as my work keeps me in contact with people from Nigeria, USA, Germany, Scotland, UK, Spain, Singapore, China, Holland, India and more. A lot of the countries we deal with do not have DLS. Having DLS will not make Perth 'worldly' and I agree with Greg WA = Way Ahead.

WA = Way Ahead

Posted by Greg Monday 7 April, 2008 08:02 PM

Sammi, you are right, I did assume you swam in winter. Probably because you wanted to make a bid deal about swiming in the mornings. You failed to mentioon you did not get up in winter for a swim. Also the other worldly people that enoy DLS can see the benefits and that is why they enjoy it. You obviuosly are happy to be stuck here in a little pocket of the world and not be a part of it. Any wonder people say WA stands for Wait Awhile (yes I am WA born and bred)

Posted by O J Monday 7 April, 2008 07:50 AM

I will listen to any debate on day light saving and I will agree with the nays. But here's the rub, we are in time with our biggest customer CHINA, we are the biggest contributer to the Aussie economy, we get the worst deal federally and we still are expected to suck up to the east coast. Not sucking up you say, okay 3 count that number in your head 3 3 3 times we have said NO! and what do we matter, OBVIOUSLY VERY LITTLE. I was going to say
F--K ALL but it would be considered bad taste.

Posted by Paul Hankin Monday 7 April, 2008 05:42 AM

OJ you are very assuming. 1. I don't swim in the ocean during winter
2. I get up for a swim in summer at around 5.45am without DLS. No sun on ocean with DLS, don't swim.
How can you say most people waste 2.5 hours in the morning. I don't and I think you will find most people who don't like DLS utilise this perfect time of the day and it is not wasted. One other thing other parts of the world are just that.. another part of the world.

Posted by Sami Friday 4 April, 2008 03:57 PM

Now I'm starting to hear people complaining that the only people who like DLS are people who have come from other parts of the world that have it, and they say they love it. HELLO are there any bells ringing. These people have lived with it and have learnt to enjoy it. Get your head out of the sand and realise that DLS benefits everyone, including those who like to go walkies in the dark of the winter mornings. as for the person who swims in the morning, surely you don't wait till 7am in winter to swim. If you did then perhaps you don't get home till well after dark in the evening. Without DLS, in the middle of summer, it is getting light at 4.30 AM, and most people do not get up until 6.30 to 7. That's 2 to 2.5 hours of daylight wasted, but you would rather live in the dark later in the day. Get a life and try to enjoy it.

Posted by O J Friday 4 April, 2008 09:21 AM

what i find amazing is that supporters of DLS call those who like daylight in the morning 'whingers' who should carry torches if they want to exercise, but now are complaining about the early darkness in the evenings. Carry a torch. Personally I didn't like it very much but could live with it if it was shortened - summer months only would suit my family as my boys did have problems adjusting to going to bed but since summer is mostly school hols that would be a prob.

Posted by Alison Friday 4 April, 2008 09:01 AM

I am so glad it is over. I don't enjoy the long afternoons of heat and prefer to be able to sleep in the cooler part of the day being early morning

Posted by Judy Thursday 3 April, 2008 07:04 PM

I would like to see daylight saving shortened for 3 months, Perth doesn't really get the same benefits as other places in the world. In any case I will accept the majority vote, not just the Politicians who dictate or those Minorities who have blocked daylight saving over the years with their pathetic suggestions that the curtains will fade and the kids will eat more choclates and watch more TV in the extra hour we get for daylight saving. Let everybody decide and move on.

Posted by Phil Thursday 3 April, 2008 05:45 AM

Sorry but I'm sick of hearing the sane excuses from people saying that its too dark in the morning to exercise. Heres an idea, exercise in the evening. I work from 7 till 7 and the extra hour of light in the evening means I can actually go out and do something with the kids. And guess what I see when I'm out? Yeah some people with half a brain actually exercising when its light. And as for the people who still think you actually get and extra hour of sunlight each day which might "fade the bloody curtains" should not be allowed to vote on the issue. The WA government cannot control how long the sun stays in the sky for Christ sake. (and yes there are plenty of people around who believe it, grab some brains, you know who you are)

Posted by Andrew Wednesday 2 April, 2008 09:51 PM

if its gonna be hot its gonna be hot no matter what time. hot at 4 or 5 or 6 still hot

Posted by Suzanne Wednesday 2 April, 2008 09:05 PM

OK well it does take the body sometime to adjust...i find myself awake at 4.30 instead of 5.30am now...but it is early days.
My daughter and I love DLS !! we adore it. She still goes to bed when she is told to at around 8pm no matter what... and she does. my curtains don't faid and my cats still drink milk.
tonight we had to hurry home from our regular jaunt to the park where we all exercise (bike dogs walk) because it was getting dark at 6.30pm.
NOT GOOD
so what if you exercise in the morning - take a torch enjoy the evenings too. Thats what its all about. Bring it back ! And in winter too when all yee who exercise and complain about the dark will find it dark anyway.

Posted by Suzanne Wednesday 2 April, 2008 08:58 PM

Its only one hour for gods sake - whats all the fuss for! Do it all year round & it might be some benefit. Winter is when we could really use it. And who cares if the curtains fade - we're so f**king rich in Australia we're all buying new curtains yearly anyway!

Posted by michele Wednesday 2 April, 2008 02:51 PM

Don't you just love it. All of the reasons for not having day light saving I have heard over the past month have all been without foundati
on. the best of all is the "it's too dark in the morning to go for a walk"so it isn't in the winter?
We live in a new area and the people that are out walking, playing games in the park with the kids after the evening meal instead of lounging about in front of TV or letting the kids play their computer games until bed time, this is the start of over weight kids for sure. There was a phone pole taken a week or so ago that said that 82% or so of the population don't want day light saving. Well the people that do love it were all out enjoying it and were not even aware the pole was on. Until phone poles anly allow 1 vote per phone number then their credibility has to be questioned any way. If the government had the guts it would just bring it in without question. Wake up people, this is the real world.

Posted by David from Atwell Wednesday 2 April, 2008 01:56 PM

Natasha, I'm very sorry your sick of people complaining about DLS but I swim all year round and I very much look forward to swimming in summer in the early daylight. Try swimming in the ocean when its pitch black. Not a great feeling. Also why do I have to get up and drive to work in total darkness 12 months of the year? I agree that at all other times of the day you can generally adapt to the weather but if you exercise in the mornings before work you've got no option other than to become nocturnal under DLS.

Posted by Dave Wednesday 2 April, 2008 01:43 PM

I am originally from NSW, so needless to say I love daylight savings

Posted by Korina Mansfield Wednesday 2 April, 2008 12:37 PM

Of course you felt like you got a good nights sleep Drew you turned the clock back one hour. I hardly think dsl was the cause of your lack of sleep. Do you really believe turning the clock forward 1 hour at the beginning of dsl is going to affect your sleep that much for the months it is going? Im all in favour of dsl

Great i love it, we get to do lots with the kids and other adults, lets keep it

Oh my God! I'm going to scream if I hear of another debate about daylight savings or 7 day trading hours for that matter. Is this truly all that we have to think about?? I think it's time to wake up and smell the roses. What about saving the environment or helping the thousands of people who are at risk of losing their homes & their dignities because governments, banks and the like think that an extra $60 a month on top of all our other bills is do-able? Sometimes I think the brains of the people in charge have gone as soft as the fat cat **** that they sit on all day. And let's face it - if there is no environment healthy enough for us to live in, there'll be nobody around to give a damn about daylight savings. WAKE UP PEOPLE!! Let's use all this energy on something much more constructive - like being good to each other & the Earth.

It's only been 3 nights of normal time and I already feel better; not so tired. Because I have always woken with the sun rising through my window, I really found it hard having to wake with the alarm during DLS. I lost 1 hours sleep everynight during DLS. That equates to several nights sleep over the DLS period. Health professionals are already saying we are sleep depraved, that's before DLS is entered into the equation. How about we leave nature alone. If you want to get up earlier, get up and leave the rest of us sleep in peace. As for dealing with the Eastern States, I came from the east over 25 years ago and work for an eastern based company. I have no trouble dealing with the east; I just get myself organised, so that I can fit into the timeframe. And when all else fails - use the internet 24 / 7.

Posted by Kelly Wednesday 2 April, 2008 09:55 AM

I am all for daylight saving, but I do think that it needs to end at the end of Feb. Lets enjoy the sunshine while we have it. Is that not one of the reasons we live in Perth, to be able to embrace the outdoors. A little bit of change to our 'normal' lives is not much to ask.

Posted by Jodie Wednesday 2 April, 2008 08:36 AM

for all those people who are in favour of DLS, do everyone else a favour, leave the clocks alone and GET OUT OF BED EARLIER!!!!

Posted by peter Wednesday 2 April, 2008 07:27 AM

Get with the times, stop whinging and embrace change. Now that DLS is over I get home from work and within an hour its pitch black. No time to do anything outside cos its so dark. I get up at 6am in the mornings and have to go to work, I have no time to go for a leisurly walk before work as I have washing to sort out, dishes to wash etc. etc. and then race out to work. Having extra daylight when I get home from work means that I can do things with my family OUTSIDE rather than just being a couch potato sat inside watching tv and then going to bed very early. WA needs this change. DLS certainly has my vote as I'm a hard working early riser that does a lot before I leave for work in the morning hence appreciating the daylight when I get home from work, bring it on!

Posted by Jeanette Tuesday 1 April, 2008 07:14 PM

Natasha, why do you find it necessary that I as a morning person should have to exercise all year round in the dark of the mornings. I look forward to summer so I can enjoy getting up at 6.00am or earlier and have an ocean swim. I have not done this for 2 years because the ocean has no sunlight on it during DLS at 6.00am. The cool morning sunlight is fantastic and I do not enjoy exercising in the heat of the afternoon of a 40 degree day. Hey newsflash all an 18 month old does is eat, dirty a nappy and sleep, of course you didn't have trouble getting him to sleep. I am sick of the pro DLS supporters not understanding the fact that I have been robbed of an hour in my morning. I vote NO again.

Posted by Sam Tuesday 1 April, 2008 04:03 PM

I luv DLS,but I think it should start 1/11 and finish end of March

Posted by chris Tuesday 1 April, 2008 03:39 PM

I think it's a shame that there are not enough supporters of DLS, yes it does take a bit of adjusting but it has been a fantastic summer having it. For us Professional office workers, it is a great delight when you get home at 6.30pm to be able to spend some time outside. I think it's time we embrace change here in WA, the only next thing we need to work on is extended trading hours. DLS will definately get my vote!!!

Posted by Jane Tuesday 1 April, 2008 01:46 PM

I am so sick of hearing people complain about it being dark in the morning and not being able to exercise, here's a news flash, it's dark in winter, what do you do then for exercise, hibernate and put on the pounds until the warmer weather arrives, or exercise in the dark?
I also have a 18 month old who was 12 months when DLS came into effect and I did not have any trouble getting him to adjust to the clock being moved forward or backward. Amazingly, I closed the blinds and he went to sleep.
And to those that complain about the heat in the afternoon, the weather doesn't know what time of day it is, so if it is going to get to 40 degrees, it is going to get to that temp, whether it be at 2pm or 3pm.
I vote "yes" for DLS, but as per usual WA has trouble moving with the times and before anyone rolls their eyes saying I must be an Eastern Stater - born and bred in WA.

Posted by Natasha Tuesday 1 April, 2008 01:35 PM

I agree with RJ, its clearly visible that the eastern states are the ones that reallh=y have their noses out of joint. I woke up after dls was over and actually felt like a got a decent amount of sleep. I urge all true west aussies not to bend to this bs eastern states propaganda and vote NO NO NO.

Posted by Drew Tuesday 1 April, 2008 12:57 PM

Daylight saving is nothing more that State Govt in bed with corporate business on the east coast. Because some states move the clock forward 1 hr there is a 3 hr void here in WA where there is no reasonable contact between state offices which comes back to $$$$$$.
The touchy feely excuse that its so we have an extra hour of sunshine for whatever the reason, is a sham. What about the kids coming home in the real heat of the day no to mention those who start work early, you always go to work in the dark, possibly the Govt wants us all in the dark as to the real reasons behind their insistance that it stays for another year.
We here in the west provide almost half of Australias Gross Domestic Product so why, as the main cotributing state to this nations economy, do we have to roll over for the eastern states.

Posted by RJ Tuesday 1 April, 2008 12:10 PM

With the influx of Poms (who are used to DLS) into Perth and the the increasing urbanisation in WA, you winging country farmers Have Not Got A Change of winning at the next election. Long Live Future DLS!!

Posted by Adam Tuesday 1 April, 2008 12:00 PM

I loved daylight savings! While I am an early riser like a lot of the people that have responded, i feel the opportunity to see a sunrise is one not to be missed. the extra daylight time in the evenings has bought my family closer as we said it was family time.

Posted by brian Tuesday 1 April, 2008 10:04 AM

Wouldnt day lighy savings work better in the winter ? Has anyone thought of that.

Posted by sharon lee Tuesday 1 April, 2008 08:58 AM

Good morning all, I would like to have my say on "Daylight Robbery". I am not an "old person", just one of the many who enjoy that beautiful hour in the morning. A lot of us get up at sunrise and do things like go for a jog, swim at the beach, have a game of golf, go to a café for breakfast, go to the gym, walk the dog and ride our bikes to work. We are NOT like the eastern States. Our weather pattern is different. Daylight saving means we have traded that lovely time in the morning for a hot windy hour in the afternoon.
I am a nurse in the Operating Suite and start work at 0700am, finishing at 1730 (if I am lucky) The daylight saving trial has seen me getting up tired in the morning because I have difficulty going to sleep an hour earlier at night. Sure I get home from work an hour earlier when it is hot and I am too tired to get on my bike or go for a jog so I usually waste the hour and then it has caught up anyway.
So my suggestion to those prefer to be at work in the morning is to try getting up early without daylight saving and see what you have been missing. You will get to work invigorated and be much more productive.
PS. The West Australian economy does not seem to be suffering so much that it needs to be propped up by an hour of Eastern States time!!!

Posted by Jillian Tuesday 1 April, 2008 08:57 AM

Day light saving (DLS).
Fantastic. I love it. The extra hour of daylight in the evenings gives so much opportunity to spend time with the family and enjoy the evenings.
Because of the extra hour daylight, quite often our family goes down to the river with the jetski even during the week. We have a BBQ on the foreshore. Its just great.
In as far as the kids going to sleep while it is still light, they get used to it. Humans are adaptable.
Grow up WA. Join the rest of the world.

In answer to Greg, who gave the results of the last three referrendums
1975: 46.3 Yes 53.7 No
1984: 45.7 Yes 54.3 No
1992: 46.9 Yes 53.1 No
Yes people did vote against DLS in the last 3 referrendums but how about all of the people that have turned 18 since 1992. Let them have a say. we need to revisit these issues every 10 to 15 years to allow all members of society to have a say. If Gregs stats are correct no one under the age of 35 has ever had the chance to vote on DLS. Thanks to the Carpenter government for allowing them to have their say. Also can anyone really believe that one hour makes such a difference in temperature in the middle of summer. If kids are walking home at 2pm or 3pm it really makes no difference in temperature. in fact quite often the hottest temps happen after 3pm so in fact kids are walking home when it is cooler.

Posted by Caroline Monday 31 March, 2008 09:51 PM

its about time people got a life and worried about more important issues at hand. 90% of the world population deals with daylight savings why should people from WA think they are soooo different its better for business and safer for kids so get a life and get used to it. daylight savings 4eva

Just give me the dark! I like the dark. I vote NO

Posted by Toni Monday 31 March, 2008 03:47 PM

If it's not broken, don't fix it! I have found that most pro-DS people are from the eastern states or elsewhere in the world who are used to this extra confusion in an already over-complicated system. eveyone is entitled to an opinion, but there is no need to degrade born and bred west aussies because we don't like to follow the rest of the world, that is what makes WA great. Also about the argument that it is better for the WA economy, last time I looked, WA was doing just fine without it.
as the old adage goes.. 'Let sleeping dogs lie... '

Posted by Fee Monday 31 March, 2008 01:34 PM

I think Daylight saving is great and should stay. I work in the retail industry and we have to ring the east daily and it is a real pain and costly for as an industry not to have it.

It makes it easier for us to contact the right person in the east without realising that they aren't just 2 hours ahead of us but 3

Posted by James Monday 31 March, 2008 01:30 PM

There was no extra hour in the day... it was just taken away from the morning and tacked onto the evening. Obviously people who have been utilising that hour in the morning are not going to enjoy DLS. I am one. Why is it that those for DLS just seem to use the blog to insult those who don't like it. Stop your insults and find a legitimate reason for this 120 year old idea that doesn't save anything. If you can't find time for your kids with or without DLS..Don't have any.. and for those that already have kids, god help them....

Posted by Lisa Monday 31 March, 2008 12:41 PM

I think daylight saving is wonderful - both from a business perspective (we deal with the East coast every day) & on a personal level I can take the dogs to the beach or play golf after work. I am 110% in favour of keeping it.....

Posted by Dave Monday 31 March, 2008 12:33 PM

I would love it if the pollies had to get up and be at work by 6 or 7 am everyday. With daylight savings getting up at 5am means getting up in the dark nearly 365 days of the year. Some of us would like to go for a walk or a swim before work while the day is cool but with it being so dark you can't go. So much for increasing the exercise program. Going after work is not an option as it is too hot. And what about the skin cancer factor. Spening more time outside in the heat of the day increases the risk. I for one will be another person who will not be voting for daylight savings.

Whilst Kittys trying to educate us about the banking system (good luck) may I point out a fact that I feel has been overlooked in this debate. Nature did not dictate which states/towns were placed in which timezone, man did. In changing the clocks we are not messing with nature but more so correcting earlier miscalculations. Western Australia, North to South, covers the full length of three eastern states of which, two have DLS. Qld opts not to have it, probably because it doesn't need it, nor does the NW. The closer you get to the equator, the less productive it is. WA being a single entity can only be afforded one time zone. The fact that WA is so big, one time zone just doesn't cut it. Laterally, from Perth to Eucla there is no time difference. From Eucla to Broken Hill, the same distance, there is a two hour time difference. The only way to solve this problem is to rezone. If WA was to put their clocks forward 30 minutes permanently, this would solve a number of the issues like delayed sunrise by 30 min in Summer and extended daylight by 30 min in Winter. It would put us within one and a half hours of the East during Winter (the best its ever been for business) and two and a half hours in Summer when they switch to DLS. The referendum should not be just a yes or no, there should be options. This is just another one. For Kitty, the National Sun Bank is who I save my hours with. They offer two minutes for every five hours saved, compounded. I'm saving for an all night party and hopefully can get that before next xmas.

Posted by Rick Monday 31 March, 2008 11:07 AM

Most Australian States have had daylight savings for many years - Europe in fact has had it for almost two decades. West Australia - wake up - daylight saving is one of the best things that can happen to us! The advantage is that we get the sun rise not that early, I mean, if the sun rises in the morning 4.30 - that is really ridiculous.. On the evenings there is more time for the kids to play outside, since they need to be a lot more active according to various studies. Without daylight savings the sun simply goes down too early. If people think that daylight savings messes up their lifes, think again. I have a feeling that nowadays Westaustralians are either simply not flexible enough or stubborn not to go along with the rest of the world. Government, please keep trying until we have the wonderful, beneficial daylight savings!

Posted by Conny Monday 31 March, 2008 09:46 AM

Get up eat up earlier like the real workers if you want to enjoy the daylight. There are still only the same number of daylight hours. Could those who think they're "saving" them please tell me where they store them and what they do with them when they've "saved" them and do they get interest on them in their "daylight savings banks"? When will people learn not to mess with nature?

Posted by Kitty Jordan Monday 31 March, 2008 09:28 AM

Havent we had numerous referendums about daylight savings already? To my recollection everytime the answer was 'no' that didnt really matter though because the government just pushed it through with out getting a vote for it first. So wheres the democracy in that. And to all the people that are whinging about how far perth is behind - If you dont like it, move to the eastern states. Just because they implement daylight savings doesnt mean that we have to. (This also includes the 7 day trading debarcle) If everyone from the east started jumping of cliffs would you follow suit? I doubt it. Perth is overcrowded as it is so feel free to leave.

I'm not an elderly person, I'm 25 years old and I personally will be voting "no" the first chance I get to have a say in whether or not we have daylight savings. My biggest objection is the fact that politicians dictated that we would have it for three years before ever getting that chance. At that point, any possibility of me ever saying "yes" went down the drain. If people want to do business with the East coast they can go into work an hour early, most offices are accessible day/night for the overly ambitious. Don't force it on the rest of us! WA gets plenty of daylight hours which we can make use of...if anything, we need daylight savings in winter...I'm already going to work in the dark then, at least then I'd have SOME sunshine on my trip home.

A great big NO to DLS.
What a waste of time, all those who like it get up an hour earlier. If you really want more time with your kids why not put clock 2hours forward in winter, with perths midl weather compared to other places this would make more sense.
VOTE: NO NO NO...........

Recently people added another excuse - it's too dark at 7 in the moring (can't walk my dog??). What other excuses can people come up with to show they are so far behind the world (wake up West Australians - yes I am one). We just turned our lights off for an hour to help save the world. Don't we do this every day when we have daylight saving. If I go to bed at 10pm, I will go to bed at 10 pm regardless of whether it is daylight saving or not. The additional daylight at the end of the day is one of the geatest resources available. Lets use it. Unless you prefer to sleep through up to 3 hours of daylight in the morning (but I thought people couldn't sleep when it was light).

Posted by OJ Monday 31 March, 2008 09:01 AM

Now I've heard it all, an increase in melanomas because the kids are walking home in the hottest part of the day. Kids wont go to bed because its too light. How about you take control of your kids and when its bedtime its bedtime. As for the melanomas, I drive 152 kms round trip to work each day. Coming home coincides with schools end and I would have to say 90% of kids of all ages do not wear hats. If there are melanomas coming blame the parents not DLS.

Daylight Saving is here to stay. All the excuses in the world wont justiy not having it. The kids won't sleep - I cant have my morning coffee as the sun comes up - I want to go to bed in the dark, wah wah wah. What rubbish. What happens when you fly to the east on holidays etc and have to change your clock by two hours, what do you do, cry yourself to sleep because your body clock is broken. It would appear that a majority of the anti DLS are the elderly. Is it too hard to change your sun dial twice a year or what. Your vote will impact on all those that will be around for a long time to come where you will not. Spare a thought for the living, your grand kids. A previous writer gave the stats of the last three referendums which showed an average of 47% pro DLS. Its not black and white, its almost even placing it in the grey area. For all those anti DLS, you've always voted which put you across the line, this time all pro DLS must vote and I garuntee the next one will tip our way. Spread the word people to ensure all Pro DLS vote.

Give me 'Dullsville' and 'Wait a while WA' (hadn't heard that one before!) sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me.

I have had a long hot and tired summer. Thank God daylight savings has ended.
I had no time to myself in the morning to have a quiet coffee in some bright morning sunlight before the commencement of my working day and I was robbed of an hour of evening darkness to rest and unwind before retiring for the day.
So all summer I have not been able to go to bed early enough because I haven't had enough darkness to signal sleep .
Then in the morning the opposite is the cause of a delayed feeling of wakefullness.
NO TO DAYLIGHT SAVING ALWAYS

To all those people out there who say daylight savings is great it gives me more time to spend with my kids, what a load of rot, if you need to have that extra hour to spend with your kids then I say this to you, start work earlier and finish earlier as they days are long enough without having to put the clocks forward just so you can say it's great. No matter what time of the day or night for that matter you have to make your own time, and as a mother of 4 I made time for each of my kids growing up and I never had DLS, so why don't you get with the times and make your own time and gives us all who don't like DLS thright to say NO NO NO!

WA = Wait Awhile... it will always have this tag. why... because wa people want to live in their own little world and fall behind everyone else, no wonder this place is called DULLSVILLE!!!. Daylight savings is one of the plus's you could have.. WA People keep the attitiude they have this place will always be in the dark..

I LOVE daylight savings! I work very long hours as a teacher in a private school and when I get home from work there is still some daylight to play with my dogs and my daughter. This is a real gift for a single mum! I don't mind getting up in the dark - makes very little difference in the morning but it add HUGE quality of life in the evening. I think those who object to daylight saving are selfish and ego-centric - they don't stop to think of how it might help others!

Posted by Lea Sunday 30 March, 2008 04:26 PM

yeah finally the stupid daylight saving is over and life can get back on track, only one more year of wasted time then the people will have there say and you can guarantee it will be a resounding NO!!!!! WE DONT WANT IT

No to daylight saving, it kills night cinema, what about the families, trying to keep the children in to routines

Posted by hayden Sunday 30 March, 2008 09:09 AM

You stupid people of Perth, this is the best thing about daylight savings, the extra hour sleep in. I feel awesome. Learn how to get with the times and learn how to drive as well, you backwards lot.

In the previous 3 referendums on daylight savings, it was 53% NO - 47% Yes. Nothing will change no matter how many referendums we have, the answer will always be NO!!!

1975: 46.3 Yes 53.7 No
1984: 45.7 Yes 54.3 No
1992: 46.9 Yes 53.1 No

I love daylight saving and the extra time it gives one in the evenings. Back in SA the sun sets really late in the summer and I have missed the extra time it allows one after work.

I am against daylight saving as the west has plenty of summer sunshine .School children are coming home in the hottest part of the day , more airconditioners using energy etc . I feel this is more for the business world keeping up with other states . WHY NOT work flexi hours ? Starting earlier with an early end to the day for those in offices .
The average outdoor worker now waits for daylight before his day can start .
I agree daylight saving messes with your normal bodyclock causing tiredness and grumpy people !

Love it. I grew up in New Zealand with DLS. I recently moved to Perth and cannot believe how people whinge about things so much. DLS gives us more time in the evenings to go outside and have family time with the kids. Instead of a referendum the government should do a census so that those of us who are not yet citizens can also have a vote. As a relatively new family to Perth we would vote Yes. As to 7 days trading bring it on. We all complained about it in NZ at the start but it turned out to be the best thing. It gave more school kids opportunity to get part time jobs and work experience.

Posted by Sharon Saturday 29 March, 2008 08:32 AM

Personally I dont want Dalight Saving. I am disgusted with the governments total disregard for the voters opinion who have said no 3 times to this in a referendum. Consider this. on one hand the govt is telling us to avoid the peak and reduce energy use at home, yet if we never had daylight saving many of the people would still be at work for an hour longer during the heat, in buildings that are already air conditioned. From a business point the daylight saving only helps those who deal only with the eastern states. we deal with the US/ UK/ Canada Asia, as well as the rest of Australia so it does nothing to help our business. For the people who argue the eastern states have had it so why dont we,not all the eastern states have it. If you want it go backt the east.

ive enjoyed daylight saving its given me more time to spend with my children and to walk the dog and as a father of seven i need as much time as possible to spend with my children before they grow up and dont want to be around anymore .as a parent and a working class hero this daylight saving idea is perfect

Posted by david Friday 28 March, 2008 09:20 PM

I love daylight savings as I work a couple of jobs I still get home when it is light so I am still able to do things outside with my kids ie go to the park, beach etc. Lets get with the rest of the states and continue with it.

I was born and brought up in NSW, daylight savings was what we looked forward to growing up.Living in WA is great, been here for 19 yrs and wouldnt move back east. Daylight savings over here has been great, extra time to spend with your family and friends, and if you have to work later hours, you can still be coming home in the light. Maybe one more year to trial it will make peoples minds up.

Posted by Lorraine Friday 28 March, 2008 07:29 PM

I think that daylight saving is great it gives you more time to do all kinds of stuff. I normally start work at 6am every day so this is a bonus for me .Plus in the trade that I am in .Plus we are not all of the extra hours in behind of all of the other states. So every people who are complaining of day light saving build a bridge and get over it .STOP being such a pain in the arse.

How can anyone complain about having an extra hour of sunlight a day? Countries around the world such as Canada and the United States envy the fact that we are lucky enough to have more sunlight hours here in WA.
For all of us that are unlucky enough to have to work fulltime hours and on top of that have to commute an hour each day to the city, the extra hour of sunlight makes a huge difference. Before daylight saving, i would never have any daylight hours to enjoy things such as bbq's for tea, walks along the beach or just simply spending quality outdoor time with family. These sorts of things were usually reserved for the weekends. Whereas with daylight saving i feel my quality of life has improved dramatically i get to have an extra hour of fresh air each day instead of just being couped up in a bus for 2hrs each day, an office building for 9hrs and when i get home i am couped up indoors because it is dark outside.

With the way society now is ie: crime and childhood obesity etc.. is'nt it a good thing that children are able to spend extra time playing outside in 'safer' daylight hours instead of being shut indoors watching t.v or playing on the computer???

Posted by Emma Friday 28 March, 2008 03:35 PM

I hate it, I loved it when we didn't have it. Daylight saving stuffs up your sleeping pattern plus when you work in the construction industry it makes it even worse.

Posted by Sylvia Friday 28 March, 2008 03:15 PM

If people want to have an "extra" hour then get out of bed an hour earlies. I grew up with it and I still hate it. This summer was bad, was too hot to cook at reasonable time & to hot to eat. For those of us who are not able to get around due to disabilities it's just not fair. Incidentlymost people over east DON"T want daylight savings either.

We end up going home at the hottest part of the day, wich means sitting in a car in 35 - 40 for upto an hour not good for us or the enviroment, not a fan but the coverment will force us to have it anyway,

Thank goodness day light saving is ending. Have you ever managed to get over tired children off to sleep when the sun is still shinning. Walking outside in the cool. When is it cool at 1900 hr in summer. It really throws the kids totally out and I just like the day as and when it should be.

I think we should have the referendum now, I'm pretty sure everyone has made up their minds about what they'll be voting. I will definately be voting NO to daylight saving. Western Australia has more sunlight anyway since the sun sets here! Why the hell do we need more. My kids refuse to go to sleep because it isn't dark, so therefore, it is still daytime. I can't get them up in the morning because it's still dark so they think it's still night. My husband works on a mine site and they are not allowed to drive vehicles on site until daylight, so it stops any work from happening. We used to live up north and I can tell you another hour of heat added to the day feels like an eternity. Queensland doesn't have daylight saving, I'm thinking moving there for that reason alone!!

Posted by Jennij Mercieca Friday 28 March, 2008 12:17 PM

As I understand it, Daylight Savings was first brought in by some European country during their winter months, so that they could make the most of their daylight hours.
In Australia it is stupid that we have kids finishing school in the heat of the day.
People also finish work when it is still quite hot ... so we go home and turn on our airconditioners an hour earlier than we would otherwise have done .. how good is that for our environment and hip pocket?
Most people in the country hate daylight savings ... farmers find themselves working later because traditionally they work until the sun goes down.
People assume that dairy farmers, for instance, will still get up at sun up (regardless of the time) and milk their cows .. not so. Because the milk factories and tanker drivers all operate on daylight savings, then the farmer has to ensure that his cows are milked, the vat full and ready for collection by the same time on the clock. So, instead of having his morning milk completed by 7am, it has be completed by what is really only 6am. Then, the afternoon milk is started in the hottest part of the day!
One of the best times for recreational fishermen to hit the beach for a fish is at sundown. During daylight savings it is too late on a weeknight by the time you fish til the sun goes down and then go home and clean up. The same goes for people crabbing or even prawning .. by the time it is dark, it is too late to go out to catch a feed of prawns, etc.
Has anyone considered having daylight savings in winter? Our climate is more suited to daylight savings in the milder months. Just imagine ... middle of winter ... you still get out of bed in the dark and head off to work, but instead of coming home at dark, you could have an our of daylight after work to spend with the kids, playing sport or pursuing other recreational activities.
If we must have daylight savings, lets have it in winter!

Posted by Di Friday 28 March, 2008 12:16 PM

I HATE it, I do not see the point of messing with the natural rythym of the seasons, if business people need they can get up earlier, I do not want to mess with my body clock every year, it is not natural

Posted by Pat Friday 28 March, 2008 11:56 AM

I hate getting up in the dark in March. It's bad enough in winter without having an extra month of morning darkness now! Where I live the summer evenings are not cool until the sun goes down so for me the daylight saving evenings are hot and make me more likely to stay indoors than get out and excercise.

Posted by Kylie Friday 28 March, 2008 11:52 AM

Daylight savings is a godsend to anyone in small business. When you are 3 hours out of synq with the east, you window of contact is limited to 4 hours. It's great coming home at night and still in daylight to spend the time with the family.

Posted by George Sulcs Friday 28 March, 2008 11:46 AM

If the West Australian Gov., and big businesses want daylight saving let their employees go to work 1 hour earlier and do what they have to do and be in line with the other states of Australia, over here we have enough sunshine and we really do not need anymore.

Tired and frustrated.

Posted by Maureen Di tullio Friday 28 March, 2008 11:36 AM

I love the daylight saving why not have it? I don't see why everyone is making a fuss. WA is so scared of a change no wonder people think this place is behind the times and old fashioned. Doesn't everyone make changes in their own lives all the time so why not make one together!!!

Posted by Melanie Friday 28 March, 2008 11:10 AM

What is actually wrong with it. The majority of the country manage to deal with it without an issue. What is so different about Western Australia. People complain about it still being dark at 7am. In 2 months time, it will be the same, but 15 degrees colder and no daylight savings to use as an excuse.

Posted by Ferris Friday 28 March, 2008 10:42 AM

I love daylight saving. It gives families and those working full time more daylight hours to enjoy at the end of the working day. I don't think that the older generation who don't agree with daylight saving should have a say if it comes to a vote. They have all day, every day to spend as they please.

Posted by Catherine Friday 28 March, 2008 09:38 AM

We should have it in winter not summer. Perth gets enough daylight hours during summer. And I hate the way they didn't let us vote and forced it on us. What happened to the freedom of choice??? Inconsiderate politicians

I agree with Ann, I don't get a chance to walk either with DLS. I grew up with it in NSW, but now being a working Mum, don't like it. Don't see a need for it in WA.

Posted by Annette Friday 28 March, 2008 09:08 AM

I like it and I hate it but I disagree that the government has forced us to have it - like it or not. Western Australia voted 'NO' to it but the government went ahead with daylight saving. Another issue is we are all trying to save power and water, but I think we use more of both because of daylight saving. We are home 'earlier' and on goes the air con or for those not blessed with a pool the kids are under the sprinkler for longer.

Posted by Judy Friday 28 March, 2008 09:07 AM

Melanie, I totally agree with you, I think in life we spend way too much time complaining than appreciating what we have and that is a lot compared to a lot of other people in the world, there is good and bad in every situation, so maybe lets try to concentrate on the pro rather that con.....

Posted by Hendo Friday 28 March, 2008 09:00 AM

Darlings..... the contention of daylight saving rages on into eternity. Morning people hate it, nightowls love it. Like everything in life we all like different things, that's what makes us unique! Whether it fades your curtains, gives you less time to cook dinner or gives you an extra hour to enjoy daylight at the end of the day no matter what is decided, there will always some not happy with the decision whichever way the referendum goes.... Enjoy what we have, a great place to live, beautiful city and a beautiful lifestyle! Be Happy

Posted by Melanie Griffiths Friday 28 March, 2008 08:18 AM

Perhaps Edwin could use the "extra hour" to brush up on his spelling and grammar, but I digress. My objections to DS are that I'd like to sleep in the cooler part of the morning and I would also like not to be stuck coming home from work on the so called freeway in the hottest part of the day. I don't think we need to save daylight in summer because there's plenty already.Winter might be a better time to save daylight, perhaps, if at all? P.S. I don't like extended shopping hours.

Posted by Sue Friday 28 March, 2008 07:26 AM

Everyone has their opinion on DLS. After 3 referendums we have said NO. I have not walked at all in the morning with DLS as it is still dark and being a working mother the only time I can go walking at night is 10pm. How many others have not done their morning exercise because of DLS. Not all people finish work at 4 or 5pm but many do start at 7am.

Posted by Ann Friday 28 March, 2008 06:32 AM

I love daylight saving and the freedom it gives to enjoy more daylight after the working day is over. It also keeps us aligned with the rest of Australia. For those who get up with the sun and go to bed at sundown (country folk?) - what's the difference ?? Surprise - there isnt actually an extra hour, we are just measuring it differently. Stop complaining and enjoy what we have here to the max. For those who dont like it, leave your clocks where they are and adjust your lives accordingly. The rest of us will keep up with the times .........

Posted by Julia Thursday 27 March, 2008 09:55 PM

This morning I got up for work - in the moonlight.
We now live at the beach, and on the evenings we have gone to the beach, expecting to find it crowded with all these people enjoying the extra daylight at the end of the day - nope. Usually we were the only ones.
Reasons against daylight savings are not such stupid things as fading curtains etc - in fact the only people I hear mention those sort of things seem to be people who like daylight savings and want to belittle people who don't.
For those people who came from the UK and don't see the problem - I also lived in the UK and didn't have a problem with it - there. In UK summers you have very long twilights anyway, so it didn't make a big difference. You also didn't ever get temperatures of 40+oC.
The last time we had daylight savings I had small children, and lived in the country, far from beaches, far from sea breezes. The ONLY relief we got from heat was when the sun finally set. As the sun didn't set until "8pm+" it meant it was too hot for the kids to sleep until then, but they still had to get up for school when the clock said it was "time".
Being darker in the mornings means more energy consumption, using lights to see where you are going.
Being lighter in the evenings means fireworks at New Years are not effective at 9pm ('cos it's relly 8pm).
Watering your gardens at 6pm is the much vaunted reason as evaporation would be less - now we do it at what is really 5pm - what about the evaporation loss?
Kids walk home from school / travel in school buses at 2.30pm - potential for increased skin cancers, extremely uncomfortable conditions for children - especially country children who can travel for a long time to get home.
The reason offered that we should move our clocks to keep in line with the E States - well that just means we move out of line with someone else, and in these days of email, faxes etc it shouldn't be a big issue - people obviously do business with the USA and they are not in the same time frame at all.
I can see that some people enjoy the lighter evenings - my daughter, who has a pool, does. I would suggest that those people who like having more leisure time in the early evenings perhaps discuss with their workplaces about working flexi hours and start work at 7am and finish at 4pm, and then enjoy your extra daylight.
However I think the vast majority of people genuinely do not like it and it should not be foisted on us, especially when we have voted previously to say no.
What I would really like to see is daylight savings in the WINTER - it is dark in the mornings anyway, so lets have a bit more light in the evenings - I could see the sense in that. But in Australian summers, moving the clocks is just pointless in my opinion.
I also find the opinions of many of those who like daylight savings on this forum have been churlish and rude, without any consideration for other people's viewpoints.

Posted by Christine Thursday 27 March, 2008 07:39 PM

Well if you don't like living in Perth then go and live in the Eastern States.
Also the Eastern States people if given the choice would also VOTE NO to daylgiht saving. I love the mornings this is the time to enjoy not in the afternoon when you are doing things in the heat of the day.

I HATE HATE HATE day light savings. How dare the Labour party pack of pigs bring it in immediately after a referendum by the people of WA said they didn't want it. So typice of the labour animals!

Daylinght saving is great. I grew up with it in NSW. Moved to another backward state, QLD, who does not have daylight saving (yet). There is an uproar every year about why they do not, especially from the people who live and work either in NSW or QLD and travel to the other state to work. (eg Coolangatta/Tweed Heads)
When I moved to WA last year I thought how exciting it was that this state was moving ahead.
Don't let the noisy minority, including the biggest whingers of all, the media, have their way.
Lets all take a step into the future and keep dayling saving.

daylight savings is one of the best things to happen to wa.the extra hour given we enjoy by taking our kids for a walk along the park or beach.also there is time to do a bit of gardening or just relax outdoors.i will give my positive vote for daylight savings but really the government should just implement daylight savings instead of voting.looking forward to the next lot of daylight savings.

GET WITH THE TIMES YOU PEOPLE daylight saving is the future. I bet your the same old people who dislike extended shopping hours. You need to get a life and get off your horse and cart and get with the 2000's
No wonder this is a backward state, it's people of you

To all those people against daylight saving, get a life.
The other states experience high temperatures like us and even Tasmania's sun sets later than ours. The excuse about cows, curtains etc is a load of hogwash and kids will go to bed when their tired. To those parents who can't put their kids to bed, obviously you aren't trained in discipline. Other states are flourishing and you don't hear their farmers complaining, the extra hour is great for families, entertaining and the list goes on. WA may be soon known as the state of whingers.

How come people around the world cope with (and enjoy) daylight saving but west australians struggle so much and have such pathetic arguments against it? People's reasons are laughable. And for the record no one is loosing an hour's sleep every night...i could go on but have better things to be doing, but then that's the problem - those against it are the ones who happily spend their time calling in tv shows to vote against it or rallly support on forums like this instead of enjoying life (which is what those for it are doing and thus the representaion is never a fair one when they do these polls...) Last night I enjoyed a lovely bbq down by the river after work, this time next week i'll be sat inside watching today tonight like the rest of you...GHM.
