The Perth waterfront
Posted by Joss Friday 14 March, 2008 09:50 AM
We talked about the amazing flythrough vision developed using 3D computer graphics, forecasting how the Perth waterfront will look like following its development.
Check the amazing footage out here
We'd love to hear what you think of it.
- Do you like how the development looks?
- Could it be improved?
- Will it bring more people to the city?
Have your say on the future of Perth.

I love perth. I have been to few major cities in the four different continents. Perth is most beautiful out of all, because of its reserved park, rivers and waterfront areas. We can not enjoy concrete jungle. Yes, it will be exciting for few days and excitment will go away once you only see concrete.
People will realise when they have noise all year around, they cant see green, open sky and open water it will be very depressing. I think we should keep the waterfornt the same. Rather than building concrete jungle we can build more activities in esplanade area such as high rides, parks, open markets. Council can arrange few contests for water sports and so on, where Perth people can actively take part in it.
If we really want to know how would it be living in concrete jungle we should go and look at Brisbane. Yes we will have high rise building but no activity. We already have bars and restaurants. We dont need them at waterfront.

Cool, what 3D engine did they use for that. Myself and a small game team are re-creating Garden Island for an MMORPG, and Perth City is one of the next level of maps. I think re-creating those pics into somthing you can go into (and I mean inside the buildings) would be cool, so we will do it very soon, check our site for updates about that.

In response to Kelly (wed 2 April). It is far more environmentally friendly for the foreshore to be developed allowing higher density living rather than the endless sprawling suburbs to continue eating their way through bushland far from the CBD. The small patch of land being used for the project is currently a grass paddock and therefore any construction on it has barely any environmental effect. Its time for Perth to stop listening to the naysayers out there who wish for Perth to stay a small town. Move to Narrogin and let our city continue to progress with the rest of the world. Already, young proffesionals are flocking away to other States to take up there careers and the situation will only worsen as other cities progress and Perth stagnates in the negative thinking of the minority who seems to stop any ideas of change placed before us

My first job at 12 was as a paperboy on the corner of Murray and William Streets. Was then that I started to take a keen interest in what would finally be done with the barren wasteland down along by the river. I'd often trudge down there to hitch hike home along R/S Drive.
45 Years later I did the same trudge in the same barren wasteland. I'll be RIP before I ever see anything developed in that lifeless area. Oh I tell a lie. There's the Bell Tower and the Conference Centre. Hubs of activity that they are......

I think we have a unique opportunity in the history of our city to finally do something that will leave its mark for a long time. It is a prime piece of real estate and means so much to so many. If we listen to the knockers who run down every proposal that is put forward we will stay firmly entrenched in the 20th century and not move boldly forward into the 21st century. The same people who are knocking this development are the same ones who want to finish the day light saving trial early, who knock everything simply because it is new and will leave us with the tag of Dullsville forever. Personally I think the proposals for the building are great they look exciting and will certainly be landmarks that will be recognised the world over. Well I say lets do it and become the talking point of the nation because we are progressive not because we are boring.

Looks like it belongs in the Jetsons. Doesn't look like Perth WA at all. What message are we trying to send out - that we are a bunch of snobbish, not with the times, environmental vandals! Why do the environmental scientist even bother - nobody listens to them. Leave the foreshore alone if you can't revamp it in an environmentally friendly way.

I like the curving rounded futuristic building in the foreground - fantastic. Perth needs to be more futuristic. But what about droppping Riverside Drive underground and opening up the riverfront to better use as in the Melbourne Docklands. this plan has too many waterfront skyscrapers for Perth and not enough use made of the whole river area for public facilities and recreation.

Yes let's not build it... We can remain dullsville forever!
lets get rid of the public transport system and have horse and carriage! Instead of going forward with the design and infastructure of the city and the rest of the world lets go backwards!
Lets start a referendum to change our citys name to hicksville... And for a tourism campaign we can have a slogan "PERTH the city for the retired and the dead"
OH! But that would never happen the backward people in perth don't like change!
Hopefully the fuddy duddys with too much time on their hands won't stop this amazing visulazation of modern architecture.

Let's not go Sydney style please, lets keep WA as WA we don't need that at all, money could be spend on better things.

I would prefer money to be spent on building more affordable housing for low income people and families

What happened to the bridge? Are the southeners to be rejected again? Is this the same people who "designed" those eye sores nestling against Mount Isa, spoiling the beauty of Kings Park.

Another White elephant. Who is supplying the drugs to these people?....... They spend all this money leaving other areas of people looking tired and delapitaded. Oh yeah thats right we have a billion dollar rail way system with in adequate parking. Hmmmm. Which bright spark was incharge of that.
What a waste of money........ so is the water front. turn it into a park for everyone to enjoy......
The cost will will probably escalate. WA usually pays way to much for everything.... The Govt can afford it..... can you?.

Looks Great Way over due. It will bring Perth into the 21st Century, finally

Looks great but I would like to see money spent on Health, education and police before it is spent on this sort of development

It looks great about time they did something with that part of the river. Hurry up start building.

I think it looks abit space age, but otherwise looks fine. All except for that very tall building on the river it reminds me of the bell tower YUK! Keep them low so it doesn't spoil the idea..
Posted by Annette Peredi Friday 14 March, 2008 02:43 PM
Are the buildings shown actually approved designs? That very tall building on the river must have been designed by a man with a very small .. or was it a sexually frustrated female?

Great to see that there is recognition that we as citizens of Perth need to do something with our foreshore.
Bury Riverside drive, create a peoplecentric environment and create something we can be proud of.
The plethora of highrises scares me. Keep it low-6 stories. Guess our planners need to visit the South of France to see what can be done(Nice/Cannes).
