Seven match ban for Hall
Posted by Mix 94.5 Monday 14 April, 2008 10:44 AM
The AFL tribunal gave Sydney Swans hardman Barry Hall a seven match ban for his king-hit to West Coast Eagle Brent Staker. Is this a fair punishment?
Staker's parents had reportedly called for Hall to be banned for the rest of the season. Other opinions ranged from a life ban - to be being charged with assault!
What do you think? Has justice been served?

what reason did the swans have for not giving hall a big fine or match pay with held
Posted by bryan joyce Wednesday 23 April, 2008 07:08 PM
The 7 weeks would have been fair, but is really only a one week ban because he's out for 6 weeks with his injury. The tribunal should have said, 7 weeks, but do them after your wrist has healed, then maybe he wouldn't have taken it so lightly and would truly consider not doing it again, 'cause talking ain't doin'.

I think seeing B Hall is injured with a broken wrist and wont be playing anyway, the "punishment" is soft as a fresh cow pat and smells just as bad! the seven week ban should beging being served the first week he is fit to play again not concurrently with an injury. It's not the first time he's been out of line and he always gets the soft punishments from the Tribunal. How many friends does he have on that pannel anyway or does he just pay them well!

barry hall should get seven weeks for punching staker plus seven for his wrist in all foufteen weeks then at is not enough
Posted by christine Sunday 20 April, 2008 12:03 PM
Barry Hall's suspension for 7 weeks is a joke, the football tribunal is a joke. Barry Hall should have been suspended forever, what he did was out and out thuggery and no amount of saying sorry or I had a brain snap is going to change that, I just wish that the young footballer would think again and have him charged with assault . Not only has Barry Hall bought the game into disrepute he has also given the Swans bad publicity because of his actions. Good luck Sydney Swans I think you might need it if you continue to keep Barry Hall on you team.

i think barry hall displayed very unprofessionalbehavior particularly when we rtrying to set good examples for our youngsters what is the football world coming to!
Posted by jan Friday 18 April, 2008 07:35 PM
I am in complete agreeance with Mich. His suspension should start once his wrist is healed. Karma is something that will come back to bite ya!!!!! pity it wasn't his face. Put him in a ring with a professional and see how well he does. NOT HAPPY BARRY!!!!!I don't even support the eagles. That behaviour is just wrong.
Posted by michelle phillips Friday 18 April, 2008 01:57 PM
The penalty handed down to Barry Hall was sufficient. However, I believe for there to be an equitable solution for the now found guilty person to remain on the field, when Sydney next plays the eagles, Hall should be barred from playing.
Posted by john pitman Friday 18 April, 2008 01:36 PM
Not fair! He should get more than that.
Posted by paulik Friday 18 April, 2008 01:20 PM
Barry Hall should have been banned for the rest of the season. I don't care what Staker did or didnt do the guy I dont believe that there is any just cause for punching Barry Hall doing what he. It was a football game not a boxing match.
By the way (you people who think Barry Hall was justified in what he did) do you not realize one punch can kill a person, what if Staker had died due to the incident then what would you people have to say.
A Red card system should be introduced into AFL like they have in soccer. I believe that will stop other players doing of thinking of doing the same thing next time.
Posted by Beth Jordan Friday 18 April, 2008 11:53 AM
he really hasn't been suspended for 7 weeks as he wrist is going to take 6 weeks to heal therefore only been given a one match ban. AFL need to look at there rules a bit better.
Posted by Debra de Mello Friday 18 April, 2008 10:26 AM
seven weeks is probably enough but but it should be effective as of when his wrist is healed.six out of those seven weeks will be recovery time for that so in acutual fact he is only getting 1 week. No wonder he looked so smug as he wa interviewed after the tribunal
Posted by Rae Friday 18 April, 2008 10:16 AM
I am sick and tired of this subject so what he only got 7 weeks, does any one rember the old days of football rough n tough maybe most of these players should be wrapped in cotton wool get over it Eagle supporters bring on the old games of footy
Posted by corrrine Friday 18 April, 2008 08:08 AM
Johnny Lewis would of been happy with the hit,Hall has been a great forward for a long time, but also a hit man for a longer time. The tribunal needs sorting out as much as Hall. One wonders what would the punishment have been if he had hit a Collingwood player?or a Chris Judd
Posted by David Penno Friday 18 April, 2008 07:13 AM
I WOULD LIKE TO TELL YOU ARE STORY ABOUT A SWANNIE CALLED BARRY. NOW IF BARRY WAS A EAGLE OR DOCKER HE WOULD HAVE GOT A MINIMUM OF 12.
Posted by MICHELLE Friday 18 April, 2008 06:20 AM
I hate football but I can understand why everyone is so angry of the fact that Barry Hall only got a 7 week suspension, no Mich you are not the only one who thinks that it is wrong that he will only miss one game because he has (maybe not) running into the fence was quite lets say convenient at that time to say the least, because he probably knew that he was going to be suspended anyway, so why not make it look like a broken wrist, and then get a 7 week suspension your going to be out anyway so why not make it look like the real thing. As I said I hate football, but if this was an Eagles or Dockers player the recation would be alot different, all the other team supporters would be calling them to be sacked, charged, banned and they would have ceraintly would have been taken off the field straight away. So to sum it all up, again one set of rules for us here in the West and one set of rules for the them over in the East, and guess what the East Coast rules win all the bloody time no matter what sport it is.
Posted by Rosemarie Friday 18 April, 2008 06:01 AM
It wasn`t a king hit,If Barry king hit him he would still be in hospital,It`s a contact sport there are to many people trying to soften the game, back in the day they where tuff and shook the hit off,but all the players are soft as now.tuffen up and get on with the game,7 weeks are to many should of been 3.
Posted by A Kenny Friday 18 April, 2008 02:21 AM
I am a Fremantle supporter and really disgusted that Dale Kickett got longer for a melee during a derby and there was provocation. Why is it that because he is not from WA he gets one week. Yes that is right one week as he is injured for the first 6 weeks. Good luck Sydney Swans as you will now be a target from the fans of other clubs. Maybe the team should give an added ban.
Posted by julie Thursday 17 April, 2008 03:00 PM
pathetic, weak, crap. Its as though he only has one weeks suspension. just goes to show what a biased tribunal we have
Posted by judy stewart Thursday 17 April, 2008 10:30 AM
I THINK HE SHOULD BE BANNED FROM PLAYING UNTIL HE IS PROVEN FIT, AND WON'T ATTACK ANY ONE AGAIN./ IF IT HAD OF BEEN A EAGLE THAT DID IT HE WOULD OF YOU CAN BET YOUR LIFE ON THAT.
Posted by Gwen, Thursday 17 April, 2008 10:28 AM
Absolutely disgraceful. 7 weeks is no where near enough it should be the entire season. And he should be charged with assault. He wont learn his lesson he doesnt even belong in the AFL.
Posted by Drew Thursday 17 April, 2008 09:52 AM
Barry Hall should start his seven week suspension after his wrist is healed that would be justice ! otherwise its a joke.
Posted by Joan Ross Thursday 17 April, 2008 09:38 AM
Barry Halls ban should be applied after the his return from injury to his broken hand. The AFL tribunal should have considered this before giving out his sentence.
Posted by Modesto Thursday 17 April, 2008 08:04 AM
Seven weeks is not enough, he should be given at least 12 weeks after his broken arm has healed.
Posted by Mark Hankey Wednesday 16 April, 2008 06:03 PM
I don't believe in violence at all for any reason but if the boot was on the other foot would the same comments still be made by the same people.
Posted by Jan Wednesday 16 April, 2008 02:40 PM
Barry Hall should start his seven game ban after his broken wrist is fixed. As Mich said, he will only be missing one match, which is not fair. Staker should also press charges against hall and have him arrested. If it happened in the pub, the police would of charged him, so why not in football too.
I personally think Hall should of recieved the same fine as if any player who strikes an umpire gets. LIFE!!!
Posted by Greg Wednesday 16 April, 2008 02:18 PM
He should have either been banned for the rest of the season, or the seven weeks ban come into effect after his "sick leave", whichever was the longer.
Posted by Elaine Wednesday 16 April, 2008 12:33 PM
I've read some of these comments and its not about whinging West Coat supporters, I really don't think you get the point some of you. It is about another player loosing his temper and king hitting him. If it happened in Soccer he would have had a RED card straight away and taken off the field and not been allowed to play that game out, therefore he wouldn't have injured himself. I was at the game on the weekend and yes we played a shocking game no one is disputing that. Travelling home on the plane the next day we were on the same plane as all the Eagle players and I was going to give them all what for but then I realised that most of these players are all young boys and really had no chance with the likes of O'loughlin, Kirk, and Goodes but they tried, they did their best on the day. I would also like to mention that not only was Barry booded by the West Coast crowd he was also booded by his own Sydney supporters. It's all about what is good and not good for the sport and That was NO GOOD. Should have been 10 weeks.
Posted by Heather Saxby Wednesday 16 April, 2008 09:00 AM
I agree with Mich 16/4. A.F.L
WILL HAVE HIM ON THE BOOKS AS SUSPENDED FOR 7 WKS BUT IN REALITY HE STILL GETS PAID FOR AN INJURY NOT FOR SUSPENSION. THE 7 WKS SHOULD BE ADDED TO INJURY TIME PLUS NO PAY.
Posted by John Manton Wednesday 16 April, 2008 08:38 AM
Seven Weeks is not enough for Barry Hall for knocked down Staker. I think he deserves more than that. Sorry Hall, no sympathy for me even though you got injured. This is AFL not boxing!!!!!!!
Posted by W Bridges Wednesday 16 April, 2008 07:33 AM
Although I am not an Eagles supporter I must say I was very disgusted with Barry Hall. The suspension he received was a joke & I can't see it putting anyone off from doing the same thing, all they have to do is go & hurt themselves as well which will put them out for a few weeks so the couple of extra weeks will mean nothing. I think a ban added onto the injury time would have been more effective.
I would also like to say that Cousins & Judd are no longer part of the Eagles so why do commentators mention their names every week, this can be very degrading to other players especially the younger ones
Posted by Lana Wednesday 16 April, 2008 07:32 AM
Effectively the AFL has suspended Barry Hall for one week. He is going to miss at least 6 weeks with his broken arm and only miss one legitimate game. Am I the only one who thinks that is wrong. This man is trained in boxing by a professional boxing coach and is allowed to flatten another player without severe punishment. The AFL Tribunal is a joke!
Posted by Mich Wednesday 16 April, 2008 06:13 AM
His seven week ban should start once his wrist is healed, otherwise it's like he is only getting a one week suspension.
Posted by Maureen Tuesday 15 April, 2008 09:20 PM
It should have been 7 weeks from when he is declared fit to play again, not 7 weeks as they say that's how long he will be out with his injury anyway. He is not really being punished with this result.
Posted by Diane from Tuart Hill Tuesday 15 April, 2008 08:55 PM
He would be out for about 4/6 weeks with his wrist he should be out for at least 10 matches after that not a good image for children to look up to or any u-p and coming young sports person
Posted by Jill Ellul Tuesday 15 April, 2008 08:22 PM
IF he was going to serve the seven week ban after his hand healed then fine but what difference does the ban make now.. Yes he said sorry but the damage has been done.
Posted by angela authers Tuesday 15 April, 2008 08:16 PM
OUT FOR THE SEASON,NOTHING LESS AND A FINE OF 50,000 GRAND.
IT MIGHT MAKE THE NEXT MUG THINK A BIT HARDER.
Posted by Roger Stewart Tuesday 15 April, 2008 07:43 PM
Hall hit a guy on the field that wouldn't stop touching him off-the-ball. He lashed out. I've seen the footage over and over again and it was clearly a case of lashing out - 7 matches was low but not far off the mark
Posted by cath Tuesday 15 April, 2008 07:33 PM
A seven match ban!!! What a joke. The AFL needed to set an example and missed the boat.
He should have been banned for half a season - and fined in my opinion.
He's damaged the game - and the poor punishment for his on-field crime has added to this. The AFL needs to have a hard look at itself.
Posted by Simon Tuesday 15 April, 2008 07:30 PM
Yes Barry should be banned. He has a nasty temper, and if he cannot curb what he does on the field he should be banned for life
Posted by mylie Tuesday 15 April, 2008 07:47 AM
ok for a start this goes on all the time on the ground, its all about trying to put the other off his game,
yes what he did was wrong, but at least he has done the right thing,by saying sorry the person.
You are so right they just cant handle that they actually got flogged by the swans this time, get used to it
Posted by tracy Tuesday 15 April, 2008 07:03 AM
This is just another example of why the eagles have supporters with worse reputations than those of Collingwood. I have never heard such an outcry over an isolated incident. Granted we all dont want to see this sort of thing in the game and Hall will be punished severely but the frenzy of media attention is more deserving of a brutal murder.
The WCE eagles fans have never got over being beaten by Sydney 3 years ago.
Has anyone asked why Staker was holding on to Hall off the ball ? No one seemes to have mentioned that Hall was constantly being held by Staker off the ball to slow his leading down. Im sure Hall would have told Staker many times to let him go , but he didnt.
Posted by Luke Tuesday 15 April, 2008 06:28 AM
what about western derbies from the past dont they sometimes have 36 players trying to punch each over?what bazza did was to take the pressure off the eagles losing.eagle supporters are so arrogant they probably dont know the final score!
Posted by greg Tuesday 15 April, 2008 05:56 AM
Punishment??? C'mon he was trying to toughen the eagles up! They have turned into a punch of pussies!
All they are is good at whining nowadays, look at how much they whined after the derby last year!
Posted by Swans Supporter Tuesday 15 April, 2008 05:15 AM
I have thought, if it was an eagles player that threw the punch would there be an issue i dont think so, but because it was someone other then an eagle or docker everyone wants maximum punishment and going to a bit far saying that barry shoul be charged with assault. Its just like saying Ben Cousins should have been charged for taking drugs but everyone wants to give him another chance. Drugs can do more damange then a little punch to the face.
get over yourself perth.
Posted by Tim Gregory Tuesday 15 April, 2008 04:33 AM
I am not really into Aussie Rules, so I do not watch much footy, my husband show me the news footage, if anyone behaves like that on any sporting field should not be playing in their choosen sports, if you did that in Soccer or Rugby you would more than likely be red carded and sent off the field, then if they are luck they would be banned for the rest of the season, which is what he deserves, this is not a very good example to set for young children, that it is alright to punch the other teams players in the face! A punch like that could have done a lot more damage, he could have killed him it is a disgrace, maybe red cards or sin bins should be introduced into this game
Posted by Tracy Ward Monday 14 April, 2008 08:39 PM
He's an A grade *****r. Anyone who king hits another is a gutless wonder. If he want to box, make him get into the ring and let's see how good he is. If he can't play football then perhaps he can box.
Posted by Llana Monday 14 April, 2008 08:07 PM
I'm all for a bit of rough stuff, thats what footies about, but hall is a mongrel thug. He should be sacked and never be allowed to play again.
Posted by David Monday 14 April, 2008 07:45 PM
I agree with Susie's comment, it wasnt premeditated. If I had a guy all over me I would swing out at him too. Look at all the footage not just the hit.
You all say he wasnt setting an example to the young kids that follow football but gees wake up to yourselves. What example did Ben set to the young people that followed him, it took him a year to appologise to his fans at least Barry appologised after the game.
Look at the way the Eagle supporters treat Chris Judd now.. He went from hero to traitor in one day because he went to another club to get away from the drugs. It seems if things dont go the way Eagles fan like them to then all hell breaks loose.
Just let the tribunal deal with the incident and get on with the game...Stop trying to take the heat of the apalling way the eagles are playing this season.
Posted by Kylie Monday 14 April, 2008 06:05 PM
he should get ten weeks. the afl should look at the sin bin or card system beacause it was the eagles who were dissadvantaged after the hit.( not that it would have made any difference to the result)
Posted by scraps Monday 14 April, 2008 06:05 PM
If it happened outside of the footy field, it'd have been a criminal act. He should be banned at least the rest of the season if not banned for a couple of years!
Posted by Tom Mc Monday 14 April, 2008 05:56 PM
I think he should get banned for the rest of the season
Posted by michelle smith Monday 14 April, 2008 04:28 PM
I think that he should get at least 6 weeks but the time should be served after his wrist is fixed up otherwise there has been no real penalty given to him as he is obviously going to be out for several weeks anyway.
Posted by Sandy JUPP Monday 14 April, 2008 04:22 PM
He should be out for the rest of the season. And the finals, if they make it.
Posted by Andrew Monday 14 April, 2008 04:06 PM
Barry Halls suspension should start when the A.F.L,s doctor has declared him fit to play again. Also the A.F.L should be applying the send off rule it works in other codes why not our code.please A.F.l stop the carnage.
Posted by shane Monday 14 April, 2008 03:50 PM
I think that he should be suspended for about six weeks and that starts after the injury time. Also I can't see why they should still get paid while on suspension, If you are stood down for any reason money should not be forthcoming..
Posted by Kerry Scardifield Monday 14 April, 2008 03:30 PM
Big Bad Barry is a tough hard at it footy player who did lash out and unfortunately connected Staker in the head. Let's not over react there have been far worse incidents and remember this is a hard and physical game. The Tribunal will need to look closely at the video and make a fair call on any punishment.
Posted by Rob Monday 14 April, 2008 03:24 PM
Why hasnt the AFL introduced the "Sin Bin" like in the NRL? They are out for the game, and the team is a player down! These players need to take more responsibility for their actions on field as well as off field! They are not playing "little league" anymore, they should stop acting like boys and play like men!!!
Posted by Sacha Walker Monday 14 April, 2008 03:24 PM
I wonder . . . to all those people saying he should be out for the season or, his suspension should not start until his wrist has healed - would you still be saying the same thing if it had been Staker who hit Hall? I'm going with no. He will be suspended let's just leave it with that!!
Posted by Melanie Monday 14 April, 2008 03:03 PM
Currently we have an olympic swimming contender in suspension and also a recent string of fatalities resulting from one punch incidents. And now we have fans not only condoning Barry Hall's display of violence but applauding him too, shame on you all.
I suggest a years disqualification without pay would be justified as an example to others.
Sadly I share the same surname as the thug concerned.
Posted by oaklegs Monday 14 April, 2008 02:31 PM
How soft are the eagles, a little tap on the chin and he fell over what a bunch of sooks
Posted by ed Monday 14 April, 2008 01:45 PM
Barry Hall has been a thug for as long as i can remember. The ban which should be 10 weeks at least shouldn't start until his broken wrist heals. I bet he broke his wrist dliberately.
Posted by Kim Lewis Monday 14 April, 2008 12:54 PM
Disgusting behaviour! his suspension shouldnt come in until he is fit enough to play.... he should be out all season...disgusting player he is!
Posted by Chloe Monday 14 April, 2008 12:51 PM
For God's sake let it drop. The guy has a momentary lapse of reason and all of a sudden he's Atilla the bloody Hun.
Mind you I suppose it helps to take peoples minds off the Eagles appaling performance so far this season.
No I'm not a fan of Dockers/Swans - I support REAL FOOTBALL!!!!!!
Posted by Angela Monday 14 April, 2008 12:46 PM
I have four sons, and 4 grandsons who love rugby. If Barry had hit anyone of them I would want him banned for the season. My grandsons watched this incident, what a poor example was set by a very well paid footy player. Shameful.
Posted by Christine Little Monday 14 April, 2008 12:37 PM
While I do not condone the fact that Barry Hall hit Brent Staker, I do think that there has been an over reaction. There have been a lot more serious attacks on the football field over the years. Is it such an issue because the Eagles are not doing so well and this incident helps avert attention from this. Barry should face the music but corporal punishment is not an option.
Posted by Robyn Paparone Monday 14 April, 2008 12:35 PM
Ban him for the whole year, disgusting behaviour.
Posted by Jacqui Curtis Monday 14 April, 2008 12:23 PM
What a good example of how NOT to behave for the younger generation. An absolute brainless thug full of himself. Ban him for life.
Posted by Trisha Monday 14 April, 2008 12:18 PM
If he is injured he should be suspended after he comes back from injury time and I agree with Grace, he should be charged with assault!
Posted by Kristy Monday 14 April, 2008 12:04 PM
Its about time the AFL bought in a red card / sin bin arrangement like other football codes with players in this situation immediately sent off for the duration of the game without being allowed to be replaced.
Why should a player that blatantly breaks the rules be allowed to play on for the duration of the game, when the player being attacked is unable to continue.
Posted by Paul Monday 14 April, 2008 12:02 PM
any punishment given should only commence when staker is fit to play again. Until then, Barry should be sidelined. If he is injured then his punishment should also not commence until the later of him either him being fit to play or staker. As it is, he could be injured for 6 weeks with his wrist, be suspended for say 5 weeks, and once recovered from his injury be ready to play. what sort of punishment is that
Posted by ross thomson Monday 14 April, 2008 11:59 AM
Doesn't really matter now. He should have been punished instantly - i.e. been sent from the field. The eagles had to play a man down for the rest of the game, but barry and the swans carried on with a full compliment. Any punishment now only benefits other teams, not the eagles.
Posted by Steve Monday 14 April, 2008 11:56 AM
This is the result of the c**p that goes on behind play and has nothing to do with the ability to play football. Any player pushing, shoving bumping punching (anything designed to aggrivate the other player ) when not playing the ball should get a ban.
Posted by Reg Monday 14 April, 2008 11:46 AM
Should be Out for the year
He should be charged with assault also
Posted by Grace Monday 14 April, 2008 11:38 AM
Disgusting behaviour - doesn't matter if it is premeditated or not - it is supposed to be sport not aggravated assault.
Posted by Sam Monday 14 April, 2008 11:35 AM
edwin - I'm not an Eagles fan either but completely disagree with your comment. It was an uncalled for action that has no place in our game.
Posted by greg Monday 14 April, 2008 11:34 AM
he should of belted more players. It would knock some sense into those softies
Posted by edwin Monday 14 April, 2008 11:31 AM

If the AFL don't do anything - The Swans should. It's not good for the game or for young SWANS fans to see. He's meant to be a hero for some young fans.
Posted by luke Monday 14 April, 2008 11:25 AM
Let's put it in perspective here. It wasn't premeditated. It was clearly a lashing out at a guy that wouldn't stay away. He didn't charge the guy and knock him out... he was bearly looking at him.
I'm not Swan's supporter by any streatch - but it wasn't premeditated - simply stupid.
Give him 2 weeks ban and stop the fuss just because he hit a player from our state. It's always been a rough sport.
