Australia: the HEAVYWEIGHT champion of the world
Posted by Mix 94.5 Friday 20 June, 2008 10:41 AM
It's official. Australia is officially the most overweight nation in the world. Reports suggest that 26% of the Australian population (which is almost 4 million people) are now classified obese. That makes us fatter than the US or the UK, which may surprise many out there?
We want to know how you feel about this damning statistic?
- Is the government doing enough to curb the trend?
- What can we do as Australians to shed the weight?
- More exercise? Better diet? A combination of both? What do you think?
Have your say on Australia's obesity problem.

If the stats on more australians being overweight is true, why do they keep making aeroplane seats so small. ?? Why can't they have weight restrictions on people travelling in planes? Like they do for truck drivers and motorcycle postal workers.???

Eating should be about nourishment - not simply filling your stomach.
Even what many people call 'home-cooked' is not so; cooking pasta and adding a bottled pasta sauce that is filled with thickeners, preservatives, flavours, etc. is not healthy.
Almost all brands of yoghurt have thickeners, etc. in them too. It is our choice as to what we put in our bodies. CHOICE!
The biggest factor in this argument for the average Aussie is time.
We are advertised to death and encouraged to full our lives full of meaningless 'have-to-do' activities that are worth nothing when push comes to shove. As a result, we are extraordinarily time poor.
Buying and preparing noursihing food takes time. I refuse to buy so-called 'food' that is loaded with additives and colours, preservatives, anti-caking agents, etc. I also refuse to buy fruit and veg that is not freash and grown in Australia (most garlic is grown in China and they still use DDT there...beware).
Don't even think about trans-fats!!! Eating sugar-free additive rich "lite" foods, causes people to crave carbs shortly afterwards; most bread is full of preservatives and anything with a long shelf life is almost always really baaaad for you.
The answer is, check out what is really valuable in your life and you will see that t-i-m-e is the key. Consider making lunch for a group of friends on the weekend, instead of going out a-g-a-i-n. Cook up a storm and freeze extras for your own 'fast food'.
It's so sim[ple, but without education and practise, it seems an insumountable challenge.

Well, at least we're on the same page about crap food making you feel like crap. I totally agree on that one. But, people are monkeys and I think you need to give them incentive for eating healthily. Make the vegetable stir fry they could make much cheaper than going down to the local takeout for another crap meal...

Oh Dan, if you spent $50 on ingredients I can GUARANTEE your pizza will taste a whole lot better than your $5 jobs. People don't have to spend lots on fresh veg, go to your local farmers market. I spent $10 last week and got a bag of pears, 2 bags of apples, a butternut pumpkin, a whole celery, and a bag of tomatoes. And that market is easy to get to with public trans or bike. Shit food makes you feel shit, and you don't feel like doing physical activity. Its a choice. Make it. You wanna be fat or you don't. Yes there are medical reasons for some. I know someone who got a stomach staple and eats chips and biscuits and soft drink. Hello. Education.

It shouldn't matter how much food costs. There's no excuse not to do exercise. How easy is it really? Get off your ass and do something. Your not going to loose it if you don't do anything about it. I am so sick of people saying that they can't loose the weight. Whether or not you have issues with your past or not. Get your shit together and just do it. It's as easy as that.
I myself have had weight issues in the end it was myself stopping myself. It all comes down to the individual. Do you want to loose it or not? and if you catch yourself using excuses then you need to fix it.

i agree with Dan, crap, unhealthy food is way cheaper than the good fresh stuff! That's a major reason why people in lower socio economic areas tend to be heavier- bad food's cheaper, and it's not just take away. Look at the price of fresh fruit and veg as opposed to frozen pies and chips. Gym subsities is a great idea!

Hey Kylie, I'm happy to show you where you can get $5 pizza's and $50 worth of ingredients to make the same thing at home :)

Reading Dan's comments were interesting!! I find that to buy ingredients for a good meal is CHEAPER than KFC, expecially when you are talking about a family of 3 or more. We bought Pizza's and Coke recently and it cost $40. For $40 I could buy a free range chicken breast, a broccoli, a bag of pasta, 1kg bag of carrots and a bottle of OJ and have CHANGE. There are no excuses I'm afraid.

People eat too much shite! I worked on a register in Perth for 12 months and the amount of white bread chips and coke that went through was astounding. Come on people, simple changes like brown bread and OJ. Education education education is the key.

That's right Dan... but what about subsidising gym memberships or rewarding people who keep fit... financially or otherwise... give people incentive to keep healthy

With the financial climate at the moment, you know there's trouble when the ingredients for a fresh vegetable pasta meal (for example) costs almost triple what a KFC burger meal would cost. And that's just saving money, what about the time saved as well...!!!
