Did you go to the shops yesterday?

Posted by Mix 94.5 Monday 16 June, 2008 02:06 PM

A few of the suburban shops were open on Sunday 15th June, and reports suggest that (at Karrinyup at least), there was pandemonium.

So, the can of worms has been open again. We want to know what you think about Sunday trading:

  • Was the crowded shopping mall yesterday just a fluke, or do you think you'd see patronage every week?
  • Will it bring together or drive apart families (and family time)?
  • Did you go to the shops yesterday? How was it?

Have your say on Sunday trading.

YES it was pandamonium at Karrinyup Shopping Centre on Sunday 15 June. I worked at Woolworths that day and it was non stop. NO we do not need or want Sunday trading. Sunday is a day off. Some people came to the shop that day JUST because we were open!

I went to Garden City, Booragoon, later in the afternoon, hoping there'd be less people - after driving around fruitlessly with many other people for half an hour trying to find a parking space somewhere in the suburb, I gave up and went home. YES I want Sunday shopping - we need it! When will we as a State grow up like the rest of Australia? We are too busy in our lifestyles to try and cram everything into a Saturday. It's ridiculous! Of course it won't "drive apart families" - if you dont' like the idea of shopping on a Sunday then don't do it - it's not difficult people! But let the rest of us move into this century, dont' hold us back. aaarrgghhhhhhh!!!

Didn't go to the shops. Wouldn't want to be anywhere near a shopping centre on a Sunday at all. SUNDAY IS A FAMILY DAY, VISIT THE OLDS DAY , A FOOTY DAY OR A PICNIC DAY to name a few. Let's NOT be a Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.....let's be uniquely Australian.

Bring it on. Stop being soft, grow up and open up on Sunday.

interesting to see sunday trading so popular but shops enticing us with huge 40% sales to get us their.
will these specials stay the same when it becomes a norm or am i being cynical and the prices will only revert to what we now pay

Where do people find the extra money to go shopping on a Sunday and would they truly be able to support Sunday Trading on a fulltime basis - especially with the way everything costs so much more these days? Or are things much cheaper on a Sunday because of Sunday Trading ? Are people really going to the shopping centres to spend time with their families (what a funny way to spend time with your family), or are they just wandering around aimlessly, spending money they don't have on things they don't need just to kill a few hours on a Sunday because they're bored. It would be nice to think people are genuinely shopping for food and necessities for the family they want to spend time with because they can't do it any other time...however I don't believe that would always be the case. My husband and I both work fulltime, we have 2 teenage children from my previous marriage to feed, clothe and educate (with the most minimal support from my ex) and have the usual weekly high mortgage payments to make, as well as trying to find even more money to run our cars, buy food and pay the usual household bills. We certainly don't have the extra $$$ to spend at places like Karrinyup, Garden City or the like just because they open up on a Sunday. If Sunday Trading comes into play, then I think it would be a great idea if any one of these major shopping centres could ensure that it has a fuel station with really cheap fuel attached to it, a supermarket with food at half the cost of what things are during the week and a bargain basement that provides great quality shoes and clothing for the whole family. Can you imagine how many people would travel to that centre for all those reasons and I'm sure the takings over the counter would be enough to excite any shopping centre manager as well. Anyway it's food or fuel for thought !!!

If you really need to go shopping on Sunday, go into the city it's open from 12 midday till 5pm. Mandurah is also open on Sunday's during the summer. I am one of those people who voted for daylight savings so I can spend more time with my husband and children, not to go bloody shopping!!( and I work a 50 hour week)

Posted by sharon Thursday 19 June, 2008 12:45 PM

It would have been interesting to do a survey of shoppers at Karrinyup last Sunday, to see who had voted for longer shopping hours. I was there, and poor Fat Cat was mobbed, so you can't tell me that's not family oriented

I just came back from Melbourne & found the opportinity to go to the shops any hour was fantastic. People have choices if you don't want to work don't, just like you do now, if you want to work do it, just like you do now. Retailers don't have to open if they don't want to the hours are only being deregulated, the choice is theirs. As for daylight saving bring it on.
Western Australia needs to get with the times it's called "progress".

To all the people that want extended shopping hours spare a thought for the people in retail that rely on Sundays to catch up with their families. I work in the retail industry and love what I do but with all my kids in the work force Sunday is the only day we can get together. The company in which I work are already struggling to find staff as no one wants to work Thursday nights or Saturdays as there are many other options with better pay out there and they would prefer a social life. Customers want staff to be knowledgeable about the product they are buying and you will find that the Sunday staff will have a high turnover and they will not have the information the customers are looking for. People will no longer push themselves to shop on the existing trading days and mosey on in on Sunday. Hence same customer but the staff costs are more. Sure there will be penalty rates for wages on Sunday when it first comes in, just as it was when all day Saturday and Thursday night trading came in, but as it became more acceptable the penalties disappeared. Will it be the same for
Sundays? I say to parents, dont drag your kids to the shops, they hate it, do something more constructive with them and let retail staff enjoy their families.

we say we want daylight saving to spend more time with our families well what about those people in retail when do they get time to spend with their families late night trading and sunday trading is not needed, If you cannot get what you need 6 days a week then 1 more is not going to help

there would have been lots of people at karrinyup because it was the only shopping centre open, I wounder how many people would have been there if all centres were open.
We were in Adelaide betwen christmass and new year and the shopping centres were vertuly empty on Sundays. I also wonder how many of the people that want Sunday trading would actually be prpared to work on the Sundays especially when the other half has a Monday to Friday job and their children only have the weekend off of school. It may create a few more Casual jobs but most of the labour would be supplied by changing the hours of full time staff, who have to work those hours if they want or need the job.
However the Govt. will bring it in regardless of what the majority of people want.

I agree with Jennifer Kite - I voted yes and I was at the shops - could'nt find a park thinking how many of these people voted no in the last referendum??? If parking when off the votes I should have been able to get a park out the front!! GO 7 DAY TRADING !!

To all the blow in Eastern Staters, if you don't like our trading hours, go home, go home now. To all of those that like to go shopping on Sundays as a family outing, just take a moment to think of those working on Saturdays & Sundays that can't attend their childrens sporting events. Where is their family time. To all of those that want extend hours, just stop being so selfish and think of those that will have to work.

We were in Perth in 2006 on holiday from Britain. My wife said it was like being in a time warp, 5.30 shops shut and not open Sunday. But in Britain a lot of the small shops still shut on Sundays and its not affected their profits much. If the hours the shop is open do not suit you though do not take it out on the staff complain to management please.

24 hr trading is anti family and for no other good reason than profits for big business and the convenience of lazy unorganised people who could not organise themselves out of a paper bag. The shops are open with plenty of hours for anyone to do their shopping. Support small business and the family.

Look it's a waste of time. This state is a NO state, even if we had a referrendum for tax cuts we would still vote NO. Grow up WA and get with it

Posted by edwin Tuesday 17 June, 2008 03:42 PM

Ny mum used to run a small business with her brother and sister-in-law. Thursday night trading came in. They didn't make any more money, it just spread their same take over the week. They couldn't afford to pay staff extra so it was up to them to take on the extra hours. Then all day Saturday trading came in. Same deal. But if they decided not to open Sat arvo then people would go elsewhere. Then Sunday trading came in for small shops. Once again they had to open but there was no more money to be made - less in fact as running costs were much higher for elect etc as the shop was open 7 days).
Sunday trading, while good for the shopper to start with, is only good in the long run for the bigger shops because if they can cause the smaller businesses to close then they get rid of competition and in the end consumers lose too.

Posted by KB Tuesday 17 June, 2008 10:25 AM

Of all the people that went to the shops, how many voted "NO" at the last referrendum. What will you vote next time, "YES" I assume.

We want to live in the 21st century but there are some things that are holding us back. We want the tourists to visit and bring revenue with them but we need to step forward and enjoy both the positive and some of the negative impacts of this. Sunday trading is not something we should discuss any further - let's just do it because and enjoy the things that every other city in the world has enjoyed for many years!

Wa needs to get with the times, sunday trading is happening in every other state but here. I come from the eastern states which has had sunday trading for years, and is widely excepted. When families go out looking for new furniture or a car or just general shopping, Sunday is the day to go. It pans out the traffic situation much better, and some people do not mind working on a Sunday, so get with it WA!

having lived in the territory for 12 years there is 7 day week trading. I then moved to queensland for 2 1/2 yrs where only certain parts had 7 day trading, however coles and wollies were open to 9pm monday to friday. this also gave kids the opportunity to get a casual job. they either decided they were either going to do better at school so they didn't have a job they didn't like or they studied more and went to uni or tafe. coming back to perth was a real shock. wa certainly isn't thinking of those you work 8 - 5.30! try getting from one side of cbd to the other in 30 mins! friends have told me the bun fight when the shops trading hours were changed to 5pm saturday!!!! WA really needs to get into the 21st century in all aspects of it's economy and lifestyle and show that it doesn't deserve tie "Dullsville" that it isn't doing anything to change!

I was at the shops yesterday and it was full of people. I think Perth needs sunday trading as its too far behind all the other states, there is no flexibility in perth and being limited to IGA on the weekends is not fair. And moving over from the east some years ago now I still can't believe we don't have sunday trading. Bring on Sunday trading

Posted by PETE Monday 16 June, 2008 02:30 PM

We need sunday trading as our population is growing and there is more shift workers and people who work on saturday and therefore no time to do grocery shopping. We need the flexibility just like all the other states. We are the only state that is so far behind the times. It will be good for tourism also to have sunday trading. I'm sure that there was so many people at the shops yesterday who didn't vote for sunday trading and who shouldn't have been at the shops but most of the people who don't want sunday trading where the first people at the shops. Its not fair that we are disadvantaged like this. We need sunday trading, get with the times.

Posted by Rosetta Monday 16 June, 2008 02:24 PM

I wish all the shops were open on Sunday. Sometimes sunday is the only day I can fit in to do my grocery shopping and my local IGA (with Sunday trading) is an absolute rip-off !!!

thats what people do when its raining they go window shopping do you see people carrying many shopping bags i dont think so!

Posted by jo Monday 16 June, 2008 11:56 AM

No because I have been getting ready for the Every Woman expo at the end of this month, if the shops had been open, I would have taken my girls out for the day, we are so busy with the kids all week do not have time just to brouse the shops, when I go shopping in the week its in & out, no time to look, Karrinyup is to far for me to shop. In Byford we do not have any shopping centre, so its either Armadale with all its new shops or Rockingham???

Posted by Tracy Ward Monday 16 June, 2008 11:55 AM

I'm astounded that after 4 years of living in Perth having moved from Sydney that we still do not have Sunday Trading!

Posted by Jan Wolfgram Monday 16 June, 2008 11:52 AM

I was at Karrinyup yesterday and MY GOD, there were people everywhere. It was awesome. And, there were heaps of families together, walking the malls, good to see...

Bring it on!! I love the extra flexibility..
