Front Page Fact and Fiction..
Posted by Lisa Shaw Tuesday 29 July, 2008 09:01 AM
I was quite struck by the front cover of the West on the weekend. In the space of two bold headlines that shared top billing, we seemed to run the full gammut between under-statement and over-statement..
On the one hand, we had pictures of a Qantas jumbo jet sporting a hole the size of Tasmania in it, declaring "Terror at 29-thousand feet". Having seen enough episodes of Air Crash Investigation to know I'd 'see your terror' and 'raise it two scared to deaths', I can't even imagine just how frightening that must have been for everyone on board..
On the other hand, the continuing saga over who should lead the WA Liberal party with the declaration that bringing back Colin Barnett would (in the event of an election that day) "unleash a tidal wave of support and sweep the Libs to victory". This sensational unleashing of tidal wave-esque sweeping is based on, by the way, the snap poll picks of a whopping 400 people. Am I alone in feeling a little underwhelmed?
More importantly it raises the question I so often find myself asking when it comes to the extensive coverage given to the goings-on in Opposition - Who Cares? No really, right now they're not the ones in charge, and until and if they are, why do we spend more time focussing on them, than we do on the lot we actually elected!
What do you think ??

For Tyson - If you love disney land sooooo much go and live there. We Australians always seem to have to follow everyone else in the world. We are smart people lets be ourselves and not be copycats (like the dumb ferris wheel)

When you think about it not one goverment haas in recent times given a shit what the public think except around election time. For instance 3 count that 3 referendums saying we don't want daylight savings and what happens we get matching numbers a wait for it 3 year trial to see if we want what we said no to, GO FIGURE.
About the plane yep scary in the plane but who climbed out on the wing saw the hole and told everyone else, on the plane. Guess no one so no one knew exactly what but according to media and everyone that hole was so scary. 20/20 hindsight amazing shit.

Hi Lisa
I can't believe you give any credence to polls in the West Australian newspaper. They only poll about 400 people and that puts the margin of error out to about 5% and beyond. Start adding 5% to the figures and minus-ing 5% and then see what the figures look like.

niether Johnno, i support a govermenment that has the best policies that suit me, selfish but honest

You're not a labour supporter by any chance are you Adrian?

Johnno we always have more strikes under a labour goverment because they give us that right, under the liberals, do you remember a man called John Howard, they took away our right to strike in a policy call work choises. The choises been work to the contract you are given or leave. In my 25 years on the work force,as a boilermaker/welder i never went on strike, that does not mean the goverment or anyone else has the right to take that away from me.

Why hasn't anyone picked up on how many strikes have been happening since labour came into power at federal lvl?
