When we won the America's Cup

Posted by Mix 94.5 Friday 19 September, 2008 10:31 AM

In our short history, it's definitely up there as one of the most memorable moments. The day that Australia took on and defeated the might of the United States at its own game.

We'd love to hear from you about the America's cup win.

  • Where were you?
  • What were you doing when you heard we'd won the cup?

Tell us all about that special day back in September, 1983.

I remember it well...we were married that day 25 years ago, hence we just celebrated that special day Bali last week, but we had the most gorgeous little man to help us with all the wedding bits at the church. He was cute with white blonde hair and the most infectious smile you could ever imagine...he's a beautiful man now..looks a little like that internut dude you have on your show...could this be him in real life ?????

I was in Osborne Park Hospital 29 weeks pregnant in the Maternity section as I was not well. I could hear the TV and those watching yelling that we had won the Americas Cup. I eventually ended up with Pre-Eclampsia and was transferred to King Edward Hospital and my daughter was born on Saturday 1st October by caesarian section in 8 min to save my life and she was a bonus and still is.

my oldest son Aaron was born at 4am on the 27th September 1983 (26th in the USA) in the middle of the race that Australia 2 won the Americas Cup. My wife & I still have not seen that race.

I was working in Newport at a restaurant called the Southern Cross. I used to hang around the docks each day and scored a jumper. Lent it to someone in london that december and never saw it again.

It was to be the day I started down my sailing career.i was 10 years old,my dad worked for the SEC. He and his meter reading partener were drinking champagne 6 o'clock in the morning, before going to work.I was running around with an Australia II transfer on my t-shirt out of the newspaper.25 years later I am still an Australia II nut and still an Australia II and Americas Cup fan.

Recently I was doing a unit at Uni when we were discussing "Iconic" Australian music.

One of the girls in my group commented that her mum had said that when we won the America's Cup that you couldn't go into a pub or restaurant without hearing "Land Down Under".

I commented that I remembered my mum getting me up so I could watch Australia II win the race when it was on...

You could hear the proverbial crickets cheeping... it was only then that I realised that apart from the lecturer - no one else in the class was born in 1983... Pretty sobering stuff!

I was 9 years old at the time and i remember sitting up cause I suffered a massive astma attack. It was the last one I ever suffered but what a night!!!

Just after they won , mum raced me to pmh cause i couldnt breathe ( i swear they waited) and i was put on a nebulizer. At the time they went on age not weight. Being a small fry, they nearly killed me by over dosing me. But by the time i got home the next day , Ill never forget the words of Bob Hawke saying " If anyone sacks there staff for having the day off - there a BUM".

When they returned home and put Australia 2 on show in perth, we went to see her.

Was another day ill never forget cause we had to have our dog put down on that day. My family sat in the car looking at the boat with tears in there eyes.( I thought it was a great day cause the dog had bitten me so many times and i still have scars to prove it). So yes i will never forget the Americas cup as the night i nearly died.

i was at Royal perth yacht Club and one of my male friends poured a beer over Bob Hawke, right before he went on the TV and muttered the immortal words"Any boss who sacs someone for not being at work today is a bum!!" He was rather under the weather but it was a great night .

I was attending Business College in Fremantle at the time and due to do an exam that morning (I passed). I was woken at an ungodly hour (I thought) to my parents joyus shouts of victory. In Fremantle everyone was talking about the win. What a place to be at this time!

I deliberately got up early to watch that last fateful race, which the Aussies won. I was living in East Fremantle, and I woke up my wife to tell her the good news - she wasn't that impressed! At the time, I was crewing on a yacht at Royal Perth YC so was following the competition closely. I subsequently was one of the many volunteers who helped out in the (unsuccessful) defence of the cup in 1986/87. It was a great time to live in or near Fremantle, which was subsequently 'transformed' into a vibrant, interesting city.

I was a fourth year apprentice working in the old east perth power station, just after it had stop generating electricity, a group of us was huddled around the radio listening to the race, it was fantastic to hear the cannon fire and the announcement that Australia had won, the atmosphere in the workshop was dare I say 'electric'

I was having a baby. The hospital staff were all delayed because everyone was watching the final race. I was given drugs to stop the labour until after Australia II crossed the line.
His middle name is Alan after his father, but everyone thought he was named after Bondy. He turns 25 on the 26th Sept.

I was on the Dole in Queensland with 7 other people from WA. It was a dole trip by 3 of us who then met 3 friends on the dole in Melbourne who were from WA, then travel up in an old holden station wagon and met 2 other friends from WA at Noosa and we all managed to get a rental house in Nambour from a Gynacholigist called Dr Dick! That morning of the Cup win everyone ran into my room as I had the only radio clock. That year was the best fun with friends and I will always remember the amazing adventurous trip on the dole with 7 friends, surfing, smoking pot, sex, drinking magic mushies and winning the Americas Cup just cemented those memories. I loved 1983! ahhhh those care free days. Hi you guys its me Wongie!!

I was in Year 11 and it meant absolutely nothing to me. Now...25 years on it means I'm old!

October 30th 1983. It was the first day of 'daylight saving' for the first time, it was the Parade for Mr Bonds 'Aust 2 Yatch' along Stirling hwy to Freo and our Wedding Day in a little church on the east side of Stirling Hwy and we were travelling from Scarborough. The wedding cars were not returned on time due to the hour time change and it took the police to 'hold' the parade traffic at Byview tce lights which had been switch'd off for us to get across the highway to the church, and yes I was about half an hour late. When we planned the day Sunday at 12 o'clock the race hadn't happened much less Aussie 2 winning.,I am happy to say we celebrate our 25th Anniversay next month. Love your show, regards Jan

i was 10, so fairly young... but I remember waking up to Mum and Dad screaming that we'd won the cup... wasn't quite sure what that meant, but now I realise how big a deal it was... especially condisering how small we were as a nation back then.
