Daylight Savings... It's back
Posted by Mix 94.5 Monday 20 October, 2008 09:27 AM
We're halfway through the last trial period of Daylight Savings. And, for the first time this summer, we're getting a run of seriously hot weather.
Is it affecting you?
- How have you felt about the trial? Has it been conducted fairly?
- What arguments have you heard both for and against?
- At the end of this trial, we're going to the polls. How are you going to vote?
Have your say on Daylight Saving.

What was wrong with WA the way it was. I came from the Uk and it took me awhile to get used to it getting dark early in the summer, but then Ozzies tend to get up early and get the day going. I prefer it the way it was and will vote NO NO NO for DLS. Why do we have to be like everyone else. I love the fact that WA is so isolated and separate from the rest of Oz and the world for that matter. Dont run with the herd - be unique.

I have lived here since the late 80's (not by choice, I'm English and my husband is Australian). Apart from not seeing the Xmas lights until later in the evening (which I find myself able to deal with inspite of having two children - we make seeing the lights a "treat" night), Summer time (DLS) is fantastic. It really isn't over 40deg constantly in the summer as the comments and people from WA in general suggest, but when it is warm, the children are now able to swim in our shady pool after school more frequently (in spite of the wind), we can get to the beach later on weekends without suffering from the wind AND go in the evenings too if we want to. It actually feels like summer. As for keeping in touch with the Eastern states for work - I now don't have to get my work finished by the end of my lunchtime, I get an extra hour in which to do so. Admittedly, phoning home (the UK) is more difficult, but instead of WHINGING like those from WA, I work around it. It has to be said, those from WA just do not like change - listening to my in-laws at a mealtime proves it.

This whole daylight saving trial was forced upon the public of WA by a wanna be dictator from the labour government. We have voted no more than once already. When does NO mean NO.
We get more sun in the late afternoon than any other state so why do we need another hour. And did anyone notice that daylight saving started and within a few days so did the ad campaign to cut the electricity use/turn the air con off etc. Who is going to come home, stay outside and excercise and not turn the aircon on when its 35 plus in the shade?
Personally bring on daylight saving in Winter, then only an hour difference with the poor selfish BROKE east coast and I get to come home in the daylight and can actually utalise the extra hour. Winter is when our bodies metabolism naturally slows down so it needs all the help it can get in Winter!

How many West Australian's does it take to change a light globe?
Change!*#@?????? Not change, no, aaarrrrggghhh.
Wake up WA, DLS is FANTASTIC. Let's try and catch up to the world a little, puhlease. Embrace change, and vote DLS in!

Norm bla bla bla bla bla if .You dont like daylight saving because of your own selfish resons just as i like dls for my own selfish resons if the referendom votes in dls will you except this and move on with your life. Proberbly not, most people who like dls have the ability to deal with it either way ,oh year will people like you stop saying we gain an extra hour of daylight because we dont and never have and the skin cancer risk is just the same give or take an hour of daylight.slip slop slap mate.and your negitives are hour positives Rock on dls

it seems that some people have hit the nail on the head here, DLS is only designed for businesses and countries in the northern hemisphere that have lower temperatures than here in the west. People are also comparing our time with the time difference in traveling, not everyone travels and when you are either on business or holidays, the time difference is irrelevant as it is necessary for world navigation (the reason time zones were designated) we live in Western Australia, a proud state and very exciting city that enjoys a completely laid back lifestyle. In summer, if you are up early enough, you will see people being active in the cool mornings jogging, rowing on the river or just walking down the street in a comfortable temperature. In the afternoon, even without DLS the temperature is still very hot. it is not comfortable or safe to exercise in those temperatures for any length of time. We already have the higest rate of skin cancer in the world and subjecting young people to an extra hour of ultra violet rays at the end of their day is a recipe for a skin cancer epidemic in the future. also those families that find it better to take the kids to the beach in the afternoon, spare a thought for those people that dont live near the beach and the price of petrol to get there, you might live near the coast but there are a vast amount of people that live too far to go there every day or even once a week and the Freo Dr sometimes doesnt get to them until very late so they have to swelter longer in the heat. one more point, China has only one time zone for the entire country, our real time zone (GMT+8hrs) and they are at the moment our biggest trading partners and probably the only reason Australia hasnt fallen foul of the world financial crisis.... yet. i do see the plusses for DLS but there are far too many negatives to support it, besides, i miss out on an hours chat time with my fiance in the Philippines as they are on western standard time and now we are on western buggered time, thanks Mix 94.5 for allowing us all to comment

I have come to the conclusion with all the comments on this page, that those for day light saving are family orientated people who enjoy an extra hour of daylight in the evening to be able to spend more quality time with their families and friends. Those against daylight saving are self-centred and all about themselves, its all about me, me, me. As for Mick's comment, god help you, you need it.

day light savings rocks should be two hours not one then all the wingers can nick off and leave WA to the the day light saving lovers
Posted by adrian Monday 17 November, 2008 10:20 AM
well i think that day light savings is great, as i can get home from work at day light and i can do stuff around the house as i start early. Those people who say all of the crap about there curtains and the kids will not go to sleep at the right time because it is light, who are the parents in the household the children your you . it is like the fuel prices you have to get use to that don't you .

I think that if people want Perth to be like over east then go live over there!
Day light savings is shit and we dont need it, we have enough sunlight in the afternoon with out day light savings and who the hell wants to go walking in the dark in the morning or in the boiling heat in the afternoon. Perth doesnt need to catch up, thats why Perth is so laid back and relaxing cos its not like the rest of Australia
Posted by Amy Tuesday 11 November, 2008 10:14 AM
I think daylight saving is not really necessary in WA, as we are a hot enough state and in the middle of February when it's been 42 degrees during the day - for it not to get dark until 8.30pm it makes it a very long & hot day.....
Posted by Mandy Patience Monday 10 November, 2008 10:45 AM
Hate it! The maximum temperature in the middle of summer is around 5pm so it is hot all evening when you want it to cool off at the end of the day. I have never heard anyone say it fades the curtains!!!!!!

I have lived in all states and territories in Australia, and am currently living in Perth. I think that daylight savings is fantastic! Perth has long been known as "the boring capital" - why, even little Darwin with a population of just 100,000 has more evening activities. Perth needs to catch up with the rest of Australia and the world. Increase shopping hours, clean up the city centre to include more cafes, resturants and evening entertainment and KEEP DAYLIGHT SAVINGS!

Love it. Why? We are a very active family. The kids love their sport training and the beach late in the afternoon. Hubby and I can walk with the kids after dinner and I save on batteries feeding the horse late

At the moment our temps are moderate (less than 30) I wonder how many people will "appreciate" the extra sun when the temp goes above 35.
Posted by graeme Saturday 8 November, 2008 04:55 PM
Cant wait till it ends then maybe the poms will go home, and leave us convicts here after it was there own decision to bring us here in the first place. They definately should have no say on weather daylight saving is here to stay or not. Why mess with mother nature? I think it might be ok in England to have a extra hour of sunlight. OH THATS RIGHT, THE SUN DOESNT SHINE THERE THATS WHY THERE ALL HERE.
Posted by Blueboy Saturday 8 November, 2008 01:22 PM
Roy you tool, i am sick of hearing drop kicks mention fading curtains etc, the ONLY people who mention this these days are the supporters who want to denigrate non supporters of DLS so please bring on proper aguments in favour off it not those old rediculous points.
Posted by Gregory Friday 7 November, 2008 03:19 PM
I don't like it, I am a morning person and like to exercise early, we have lots of light over here. It is still light at 8:30pm in mid summer. Any way what are weekends for, this is the time to have picnics and go to the beach.
Posted by Greg Friday 7 November, 2008 02:59 PM
our family loves daylight saving and no it hasn't made the curtains fade, the temperature climb nor has it effected my childrens sleep! I cant believe how many fuddy duddies say they cant adjust to the one hour, for goodness sake dont ever attempt travelling interstate or overseas, you will never manage the time difference...

In Sydney daylight savings was great. We had the blue mountains cutting off our summer time and daylight savings was great.. But here in the west the sun sets on the ocean ... no big tall mountains cutting off sunlight.. There is no need for it... I hate it over here.. We do not need it... In Sydney and eastern states yeah... but here in the west there is no need....xx

The only god thing about daylight saving is that my three girls sleep in till after 7 but when you look at it it's really still after 6 the sooner daylight finishes the bloody better we live in WA not VIC i dont see why we have to have it its just a waste
Posted by Narelle Thursday 6 November, 2008 11:22 AM
I don't like daylight saving, it's too dark to ride the horses in the early cool of the morning before work and then too hot after work.

Now wasn't this vote about business losses not an hour of fun in the sun. Without much information available on those losses how can we make an informed decision, if anything to avoid another vote. By my layman's reckoning the issue of losses is primarily about centralized banking and financial services as we hear constantly from the industry. For example, if I was selling a house in say Melbourne and both buyer and sellers banks were in Melbourne, settlement, even with a mortgage center in Adelaide should be rather quick, lets say 14 days. In WA the process will normally take 28 days and in the bush longer. Not because of time zones but processes. Now say I as the seller am paying a mortgage @$100.00 per day, that's $1400.00, more I pay before settlement. I call that an institutional loss due to those interstate processes. Now we have a standard two hour difference that often causes delays when hiccups occur these issues are worse with no DLS. I'll call them accumulative losses. Now without a tabling of the claimed losses by the government, how are we to know if the losses are truly accumulative or institutional. In that regard would the one hour difference be negligible against the true institutional losses? This matter was tabled and rushed through parliament without debate. Careful fellow west aussies, your yes vote may well be very costly. Demand all the facts be debated or simply vote no.

I am not a fan of daylight savings either! I am also a mum of two young children under four. Last night while cooking dinner at 7pm new time, it was still light outside, even if we close the blinds and drapes, the light still filters through.
We do not need daylight savings as there is still light until 7pm old time at the moment
What would happen if we lived in Antarctica, where they have months of light, then months of dark? Would we go ahead 24 hours or something!
Think logically, we are fine on old time, our bodies are confused on new time.
NO DAYLIGHT SAVINGS!!!

I am sorry but im just not a fan - i have two children one school age one due to start kindy next year - and the trouble i have with them being tired and cranky is sending me crazy - and before anyone starts on me they go to bed at a reasonable time between 7.30 - 8pm but im sorry their body clocks just dont get it .....take it away we have enough sunlight and those who say we dont .......move .....

Just a follow up comment. Have a look at this site too
http://www.timeanddate.com/time/dst2008.html
It shows a breakdown of countries that do and dont use DLS
At the end there is a table/tally which states:
Countries which do not observe DST at all: 128
–Countries where all locations observe DST some part of the year:66
–Countries where many, but not all locations observe DST: 10
Making a total of 128 NO (62.75%) vs 76 YES (37.25%)
So infact, country by country, the NO DLS outnumber the YES'

I finish work at bloody 6p everyday and it gives me more time to do things with the kids outside - please don't take it away from me...

This is a neutral comment.
Below is a website showing which countries do and do not operate daylight savings.
The difference in green/yellow is simply northern/southern hemisphere. Those in the north do it in our winter (their summer) and those in the south do it in our summer.
http://www.worldtimezone.com/daylight.html
As you can see, some countries with multiple timezones are split accordingly (Eg- russia, canada & US)
Its interesting that although most North America, Europe and Russia have adopted DLS...
Most of South America, Africa and Asia, (especially the all important China and India) do not
This means, population wise, HALF THE WORLD uses DLS and the other HALF DONT.
Its split all across the world just like it is here!

As a mother and the wife of a fly in fly out miner, I hate it with a passion. I just wonder how may people actually do spend the "extra" time doing family things and/or exercise. Let's face it people, no matter what the clock says - the sun still comes up and goes down at the same time every day. Do you also realise it was invented in England in WINTER! Over it really is dark and dreary. I don't think this describes Australia in Summer? I think the lunatics are finally running the asylum.
Posted by jntsmum Wednesday 5 November, 2008 08:21 AM
I just wish we had it in winter months when we REALLY need the extra light. Other than that, I dont really care, cause its only 1hr & its only the clock not the day thats changing!
Posted by michele simpson Wednesday 5 November, 2008 08:04 AM
daylight saving is great! good to beat the heat and exercise in the morning, and nice to go for a walk in the evening after dinner, so you get to exercise and do more things with your family.

I am very confused. I thought we were voting on this DLS because WA business was loosing money, be it we haven't seen the data. An old problem that caused the '84 vote in the era of bank deregulation and good bye to the R&I Bank, same again in '92 and guess what '08. So do you get it yet, this is not about the no vote, that's not the intent. It's about securing the yes vote, why else are we here again? But what impact would the yes vote have on WA business? Well it won't resolve the root cause of losses. What cost benefits to east coast bankers? Then there's the two hour natural time difference, those losses won't change. The 1 hr extra simply makes the losses worse, but possibly negligible if a full loss analysis was undertaken. It may have more to do with our centralized banking system and related finance industries, all based on the east coast who's customers don't suffer losses. But before you run off getting excited about a "yes" vote and thinking it's good for business, good for fun in the sun good for WA, just remember dear fellow West Aussies, you may well be condemning us all to tens of millions in losses and for a very very long time. Lets wait until we see all the facts tabled for assessment. It may be that other measures like our own corporate decision making and document holding services, legal and others will resolve the bulk of the losses and 2 million people will not have to change their lifestyles on some mythical believe we need more sun, because that is absolutely irrelevant.

People get a grip - there are so many more important things to worry about than this subject. I have lived all over the world and am amazed at how much time we waste discussing something such as DLS - it is 60 minutes on a daily basis that allows people to enjoy the extra sunlight with their families or friends
It does not fade curtains, it does not make a difference to whether children sleep at night (that's a parents job, both of my children have lived with DLS and then when we moved here no DLS and now we have it again, they have never ever had a problem sleeping), it does not mean that cows won't give milk (do cows wear watches?). Yes it does mean that you change your timetable but you gain so much more, children are able to be more active as there is more daylight (therefore safer for them to be outside) which assists in them not becoming obese. The fact that you can walk for hours at night means that you are fitter. Rather than debate something that will not save the planet and will only bring us into alignment with hundreds of other countries and our other states (yes I am sorry, but WA is a State of Australia, not a separate country).. Lets debate the important things in life, like whether we should have a nuclear processing plant in WA, whether our children are growing up with the right messages, how we can fight the epidemic of young teens drinking and taking drugs, whether we can stop the teen homeless epidemic that is occurring. Lets give our government something more important to do with their time rather than a redundant referendum yet again. Support DLS and move onto the bigger picture people!!!!

Love it, nothing better than having time to enjoy our great state after work and having the daylight to make it that much more fun. Most of it happens over the Christmas Festive Season and school holidays which is good for families and great for those leading an active lifestyle.
Posted by Amanda Tuesday 4 November, 2008 02:13 PM
Daylight savings love it. 7.30 at night fantastic, finish work cook dinner and still able to go for a walk and enjoy some daylight.
Posted by Sandy Karasek Tuesday 4 November, 2008 02:04 PM
While daylight savings in winter would be great for indoor workers, spare a thought for workers that can't start work until it's light (for safety reasons - construction, earth moving etc). They would be starting, and therefore finishing a lot later.
Posted by Keryn Tuesday 4 November, 2008 12:30 PM
The reason DLS won't be tried in winter is because this isn't about daylight or dark or getting out in the sunshine or family time or any of that. That's just noise meant to distract. Anybody who thinks that a midsummer afternoon in Perth is a good time for exercise in the sun doesn't live here. The reason why Parliament pushed this through without notice and in a blind hurry as a private member's Bill - something that would normally only happen in an emergency or as a result of huge popular pressure - is because big business wants it. The corporations, having centralised their management in Sydney and Melbourne, have no intention of devolving any actual control to WA. Any time difference inconveniences them. They want it minimised as much as possible, so that they can continue to treat WA as a mining colony. DLS in winter, while it would actually make more sense for Perth's climate, would increase the time difference between WA and the eastern states, so it isn't even on the radar.
Posted by Dave Tuesday 4 November, 2008 11:27 AM
Perth does not need daylight savings in summer.
I agree with Jeff why not try it in winter!
Posted by Ange Tuesday 4 November, 2008 09:29 AM
Bring it on BUT IN WINTER when we could really do with the extra daylight after work.
Posted by Jeff Haywood Tuesday 4 November, 2008 08:50 AM
I am an Australian Citizen. I grew up in England where in June the suns starts to set after 10pm and it gets light around 4am. In December it gets dark around 4pm and only starts to get light at 8am. They too change the clocks, it is called 'summer time'. Strangely the millions of poms do not whinge about it. For those who have problems with getting their children to sleep at certain times, please do not blame DLS time. For those people who seem to think they are losing 1 hour of sleep for the whole of DLS, perhaps you have never ventured overseas or to the Eastern States and had to allow your body clock to adjust to whatever local time it is. It doesnt take more than a few days.
It is a sad mental attitude for many that they must find something or someone to blame for that which they cannot handle (or rather cannot understand how to handle). Hundreds of Millions of people the world over cope with a huge range of day time differences throughout the year. Why should a relative handful of people who do not want to cope, make it necessary for the government to spend millions of tax payers dollars over this.
I shake my head in bewilderment.
For the record, I enjoy the longer lighter evenings putting the clock forward 1 hour makes.
Perhaps we should have a different name for it, it is surprising how many people seem to think we are 'saving an hour' in daylight savings time. 'SummerTime' does seem to be rather apt. Any thoughts in making the name more acceptable to those who need to understand the concept better?

Hey all you negative people of Perth , get used to it because looking at this site and all the threads on this subject, it seems to me that the vast majority of people actually do like dls.
me i will be voting to keep it, love daylight always have always will.
its all just a state of mind, and at the end of the day its an adjustment of 1 hour simple nothing hard about it , the rest of the planet does dls and it works fine.
easy and as for extended trading hours its not far off and will happen even if it just gets pushed through with no refferendum, it makes perfect sense, my kids go to bed fine as we have black out curtains to make their bedrooms dark simple, i dont have any cows and my cafe blinds are still in one piece, get used to it all you live in the past people, its here to stay this time , forget the last 3 referrendums times have changed bring on the vote but lets all enjoy the summer first bring on day LIGHT yes light im all for it
Posted by paul buchanan Monday 3 November, 2008 08:17 PM
I really do not enjoy daylight savings for so many reasons. Firstly gone are your early morning walking timeslot as it is now dark, (there goes one hour of sanity for any mother!) Getting the kids into bed whilst it is still light is really trying and going to the outdoor cinemas makes for an extremely late night as they cannot screen them until the sun goes down, which means taking the kids to a kids screening isn't all that much fun, especially the next day! Carols by candlelight doesn't exist in some schools at the end of year as it is carols by sunlight as all the children need to get sleep. All in all I think it is dreadfully unhealthy for our bodies as a teacher I see the effect of the kids lack of sleep almost immediately after it has been introduced and by the time kids get back to school in first term they are exhausted. Also the fact that kids are now exposed sunlight when they are walking home at 3.00pm (actually 2pm). So no, I really don't support it and hope that daylight savings doesn't come in. It is a non family friendly change in lifestyle which I feel is detrimental to our well being on so many levels.
Posted by Anna Zarb Monday 3 November, 2008 07:28 PM
We love daylight savings. We can now play 9 holes of golf after work. I do think, however, that it should end the last weekend in Feb but maybe start at the beginningof Oct not the end!
Posted by Cassie Monday 3 November, 2008 06:43 PM
Bring on Daylight savings, I hear what everybody says about DLS but really for the people that work for 7 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon the extra daylight is a good thing. All the doo gooders tell us we are not spending enough time as a family and when something good comes along where you have a extra hour of light to play sports with your kids, go to the pools or beach People seem to bag it. Stop Whinging and accept it. Excuse like increased global warming etc ha what a joke, Get off you're backsides and get out of the house then you won't be running the aircon.

I only moved over to Perth from Melbourne last August and after hearing everyone complain about daylight savings i just laughed at them all i have grown up with it all my life, you have more time in the evenings to do things, if you have kids then you can solve it with darker curtains and the parenting where you make them listen to you i dont see any problem

As someone who has lived and worked all over the world I can not understand what all the fuss is about. In the US and Europe the sun can be up until 11pm and yet children still go to bed. It seems to me the majority of people who are against this dont work full time. My husband and i get to now take our children for a walk when we get home and spend quality time together, how is that a bad thing? I know every Aussie I met while living abroad never complained once about daylight saving anywhere else...why is it such an issue? The rest of the states are shaking their heads at us as we are so far behind the times (ie no daylight saving or extended shopping hours) I know a lot of people in WA like the fact that we have the small town attitude but unfortunately WA is no longer the small state it once was...time to get with the times and get over it!!!!!

Oh no, the cows wont milk and the curtains are fading.......... Blah Blah Blah.
It is here, hopefully to stay, get over the whinging and look forward. I bet most of the complainers would be West Coast supporters anyway. My kids still go to bed at 7.30/ 8.00 each night and get up at 6.00 am each morning and they are not turning into hard to handle misfits within our society like some of our community parents seem to think will happen due to DLS. Ha Ha Ha. I am living the dream and with an extra hour of sunlight in the evening to enjoy it further. I am truely a lucky bloke.

Gee some 2 million of us 1/2 million new arrivals in 10 years scratching their heads and don't understand the fuss nor the logic of 4 votes. Now we also have a couple dozen brokers who complain they get up too early, well complaint to the thousands of shift workers, they understand. Couple hundred coordinators trying to fill in orders, um yep global problem but the whole planet seems to cope. Oh yes of course banks and the centralization of Australian banking, who are surrounded by daylight saving states. Now there could be the real problem. Can anyone tell me if Americans living in LA have to wait days as their mortgage loans are approved in NY and longer if their documents are lost in Texas. Tell me again how DLS is better for business where 1 hour saves the day because there are no losses with two hours. Gee hasn't banking caught up with technology? So we vote yes and never see the end of centralization thus the real losses for WA are permanent, because you can be sure we will never have a right to another vote, that's not part of the deal. Gee who were the pollies representing? Looks like the no's have the moral high ground let alone the best share of intelligence, I'll stick with them.

It's a fact that in Perth's hot summer afternoons, the heat peaks late in the day, and continues into the evening.
It's also a fact that the worst of the hot weather comes in bunches - heat waves. Sure, it's not always hot, not even in January and February, but it sure can be, and in all fairness we have to live with the climate we have, not with what we'd like it to be.
The cool part of the hot days is the first hour of light. This is certainly the best time for exercise in summer, or, if you haven't had much sleep because it's been so hot earlier, it's also the best hour for that. But DLS turns it into rush hour.
A couple of days into a heat wave, I really feel that loss of sleep. It makes it more difficult to cope. The day to follow seems hotter and longer, and I really don't feel like getting out for a barbie or a game of tennis in the broiling sun amid the swarms of daylight flies. No, I just want the sun to go down. Daylight saving only delays that blessed event.
As for not living in the 21st century, well, DLS was a product of the First World War. If you want something 21st century, try global warming. Haven't we been told that we really have to limit the amount of coal we burn? Isn't the cost of electricity set to rise sharply? In that case, do you really think that the answer is increased use of aircon?
I'll be voting no, for the above reasons, and I'm not particularly worried about being called a whinger or a troglodyte. Abuse like that is the last refuge of the unthinking.

Hey Mr Dirazo or whatever you name is wasn't this you bright idea. Well maybe you should come and try putting my kids to bed at ther normal time while the suns beaming through the B@#$%^dy windows. And for all those poms who said they will go home if there was no daylight savings, let me say you WOULDN'T BE MISSED.

Getting home from work and still being able to enjoy the day is great. Why would you want anything else????

Daylight saving is a personal comment. I hate daylight saving only because I have small children that will not go to bed before 9.00pm as it is too bright and they want to play thinking they will be missing out on something. Then waking up in the morning, it is quite dark and they will not get up. I agree we must be close to the eastern states, they actually do not need daylight saving, maybe they need to leave their clocks or bring their time back. Pensioners and people without children love it, maybe by the time I retire, there maybe daylight saving, but that is years away. Let the people decide and governments do not just assume everyone agrees.
Regards
Debbie

I love it. My son was getting up far too early pre DLS and was cranky by dinner time. This way, he gets up at a good time AND we will be able to enjoy a swim after dinner when summer comes. Morning fitness at school will also be cooler due to the time change. As for work, I work for people in the Eastern States and it is GREAT to start at 8am instead of 7am. Less juggling with children and less hassle for the people who pay me, ie. more income for WA. How about thinking of the positives, like being able to go to the beach after dinner in the summer? There's a great atmosphere instead of deserted beaches. Come to think of it, it's nice being able to still be at the beach late am on the weekend as opposed to being gone by 11am because there's a gale whipping up the sand - ie. you don't have to get up at the crack of dawn to make the most of the fabulous beaches. I feel that we get so much more out of the day instead of just PJ's and watch TV after dinner as it's dark.

Daylight savings is a must for WA. I grew up on the east so daylight savings is the norm for me and I love it.
After finishing work every night I get home at 6pm and without daylight savings this only leaves me 1 at hour at most to enjoy getting outside before it is dark.
Daylight savings is all about enjoying summer, having bbq's and spending time with friends and family.
Come on WA - stop blocking everything from getting through! And don't get me started on 7 day/extended hours trading - Even Tasmania has 24 hour Woolworths and we can't even go to the shops past 5pm - absolutely ridiculous!
Wake up Perth!

I'm sorry but I think daylight savings is fantastic...for someone who goes to work at 7am and doesn't get home until 6pm it is fabulous...I can now go for a walk in the morning SAFELY IN DAYLIGHT and still go for a walk at the end of the day.......and i'm a child of the other daylight savings trials.....and irrelevant of whether it was light or not when mum said go to bed - YOU WENT TO BED........parental respect i guess

I don't understand why everyone hates daylight saving. I love it. It is great to be able to sit outside in the evening after finishing work, having a glass of wine with my husband and going over our day, while dinner is cooking and we can even eat outside or put on the bbq!! Also, it is great to be able to ring family in the eastern states at a normal time instead of at the crack of dawn before they got to work or mid afternoon here to get them before they eat dinner!! Wake up WA - its no wonder the people in the eastern states think we are their "country cousins" - we say no everything - sunday trading, extended trading during the week, daylight saving!!
Posted by Jenny Friday 31 October, 2008 12:25 PM
I love it, it means we get more time to play with the kids after Daddy gets home from work. We have more daylight hours to spend outside as a family.
Posted by Joanne Friday 31 October, 2008 12:09 PM
I like DLS. I have also worked in construction but find there is little to no difference in how hot it is during the work day. What I do notice is that when I get home I get to spend time outside while there is still daylight. Without daylight saving I get home at sunset and have no time to get out in the garden. I get to do midweek washing and get it in before dark - I love it.
Posted by Jayne Friday 31 October, 2008 11:27 AM
Love it - really hope it stays.
Can now play golf after work & spend much more time outside enjoying the great west aussie life style!

It is really funny to watch how enraged people become over changing a clock. Yes, you change a clock - you don't change the sun. 24 hours still happens -Amazing really! I'll send an early thank you to those of you who will insult me over this comment too. You see, you prove people's points about you entirely, don't you?
Posted by Cynthia Friday 31 October, 2008 09:33 AM
It's really not necessary in Perth! Perth gets enough daylight as it is and for those in the building industry, they have to work when it's hotter and can't start earlier when it is cooler due to lack of daylight. My brother wanted it when it first started, but after the first month or so changed his mind and he's a roof tyler. It's alot better for him and his colleagues without it! I've recently moved to London and believe me, it's definitely needed here! We've just finished DLS and it now gets dark around 5 in the evening.
Posted by Mel Friday 31 October, 2008 06:51 AM
DLS I don't think is a good thing for the elderly people and those of us who don't have a car and have to rely on public transport to take us to the beach on weekends and public holidays,so we can enjoy the extra sunlight. Public transport suck!!!!! Maybe if we had a better service it would make us want to go out more and enjoy DLS , but not at the moment.
Posted by Maureen Friday 31 October, 2008 06:50 AM
I hate daylight savings and always have. My cats work on if the sun rises it is breakfast time, When the sun goes down it is tea time. When mum goes to bed it is Bed time. If people like daylight saving so much, why can't they get up an hour earlier. Why make the rest of us suffer.

I havent herd any real good argument why it should not be in i can take or leave it probaly vote for it i really think we are stealing pommy wingers we should be careful otherwise we will be called aussie wingers if you get up in the morning and the sun shining lifes bloody good

Firstly, let me educate you people whom have only ever lived in WA. Its not about more sun, its about more daylight. Get it - DAYLIGHT! Strange huh. Kids should listen to their parents and do as they are told, we used to put our children to bed at 6.30pm when they were small, still light outside but they went to sleep. Discipline and upbringing helps. We knew what time to eat our evening meal, we have clocks that provide the time of day you see. I am sick to the back teeth of Aussie's constantly moaning about this issue and to be quite honest, I am convinced that the people who complain are those that have nothing else in their lives except to stop others from enjoying what this wonderful life has to offer. Shut up and get real, you moaning lot, listen to yourselves and you think you can call anyone whinging poms, how contracdictory.

I am up for work at 530 and it is light, I arrive home around 6pm. DLS gives me the chance to get so many of the jobs around the house that I would normally need to do on the weekend. This allows me to spend time on the weekend doing what I want and spending more time with my family.
DLS Big thumbs up from me

Wow, such controversary, for god's sake its only 1 HOUR. People of WA wake up and realise that things do change in one's lifetime. If you work full time believe me, you really appreciate that extra hour of light at the end of a working day, I do things when I get home, I don't just get home and sit in front of the TV. I make use of the daylight, I appreciate living. I have to work hard for what I earn, I love Australia, am now a citizen of Australia and have never slagged it off, unlike some people who seem to be more focused on blaming the English for everything, any changes made it the fault of the English. Take a look at your ancestry before you open your mouths. This is the 21st Century - the rest of Australia does not have a problem with DLS, why is it just WA? Come on, stop moaning and enjoy life.
Posted by Jeanette Thursday 30 October, 2008 06:08 PM
Hang on Mick, your complaining that when you go home is now the hottest park of the day?.... Isn't that better than when you hard at work under the sun????
Plus what about people who have family in the eastern states... without DLS they would be out 3 hours, unlike those friends of yours who are only out an hour... I guess you have your reasons for not liking DSL but me im Voting for DSL, it will make my work easier, you know those people who sit in the airconditioner all day making our economy go round...

Who would have thought that something as ordinary to the rest of the world would cause so much antagonism? Yvonne hates it because she likes to go to bed in the dark and wake up in the light - duh - what time do you go to bed Yvonne? 'cause in my neck of the woods (Burswood) it is dark by around 8.30 - 9pm at the height of summer dls .... and the light starts to creep in around 4.30pm now.... I can only guess that you go to bed about 7.30pm and get up around 3.30am..... and if that is the case things wouldn't change for you either way, so you may as well either accept it or change to a job that doesn't require you to get up so early :-)

Hi Mary. Your comment confirms my opinion about the viewpoint of those who support DLS against those that prefer a normal life. You have proven my point for me. Thankyou.
Oh, and Yes, I do work- Infact I am in construction so I WORK OUT IN THE SUN. I guess you work too, but you sit behind a computer all day in an airconditioned office. BELIEVE ME ITS BETTER WITHOUT DAYLIGHT SAVINGS BECAUSE IT MEANS I START WORK AN HOUR LATER WHERE IT IS AN HOUR HOTTER AND FINISH WORK WHEN ITS HOTTEST...
Yes, the temperature in Perth DOES NOT PEAK AT 12-3 as it does in Europe. Infact, it does indeed peak at 4-4:30 which now means in peaks at 5-5:30. You only have to watch the news to know that
Lastly, to all the BRITS out there that complain that they cant vote. I would like to point out that there is also a large asian population that also cannot vote. Although I am not one of these, I have colleages which are and they will be opposed to this as they currently share the same timezone with their countries of origin and DLS puts them an hour away from their relatives.

Having to spend the extra $ to vote on DLS when the people have already spoken - seems the $ can be much better spent supporting schools, public agencies, hospitals, etc -especially given the delicate financial situation the world is currently enduring. I find the extra hour of light in the morning far more enjoyable. Why is DLS in the summertime? We all can use the extra hour of daylight in winter more than the summer. Having grown up in DLS, at first I was looking forward to it. But it just does not make sense to me in Perth. I feel it is more like daylight stealing time!

Hello Perth, this is the 21st century calling. Yes, that's all you boring people who can't stand change! There are a very large amount of people who will be denied a say in this "referendum" because we haven't been given the right to vote - because WE ARE BRITISH! Yes, the population of WA has a VERY LARGE AMOUNT OF DAYLIGHT SAVING BRITS HERE!!!!! We love it, we've always had it and it's bloody great to be able to come home from work and then go to the beach. Who the hell has time to go to the beach at 5.30am? Certainly not people like me who are a mum getting their child ready for school. For all those who harp on about their curtains - well diddums and yah boo sucks to you! If that is all you have to worry about, then your world is pathetically small and you need the extra hour of daylight to get out more. WA is DULLSVILLE - no Sunday shopping, you don't like change - well wake and smell the cappuccino - we all know the risk of skin cancer and unless you are out in the sun without the old slip slop slap you are running the risk no matter what hour of sunlight you have. Perth is a dull city in which to live - you are parochial, resistant to change and nothing dear Lisa Scaffidi says or does will make me think any different. I am here because of work. I like the extra hour of daylight because then I can go out and do stuff like go to Kings Park or the beach. Get your silly little sandgroping heads out of the sand and understand that change is inevitable. the only thing Alan Carpenter did in his time of office or Geoff Gallop was to bring this back. It should not have been a trial and Colin Barnett is pretty crappy to think it is useless. For the record, I reckon he is. For the guy Alan - the hours of 12-3pm are the hottest or were your ears closed then in geography as they seem to be now? I just can't believe that people are so resistant to change in this state - no wonder it has such a negative impression on the rest of the country.

How many times is it going to take for the government to get the point, w.a does not want daylight saving.
All of you that want it, move over east, why do we have to be like the eastern states we are doing quite ok without having stupid so and so's tring to bring something in that we don't want.
Posted by Simone Wednesday 29 October, 2008 08:59 PM
I read quiet a few comments written by Sandgropers(peasants). I must say that about 98% of the comments made against dls are total..... I can't even find the right word for it. You can not fit so much STUPIDITY into one word.
With so much selfish backward thinking... God Help Us.
I know now why most of the people don't want an extra hour of sunlight. Because they have been in the sun for too long already.
Posted by Paul Wednesday 29 October, 2008 07:18 PM
How dare John Howard force another hour a day on us. It must be his fault, he gets blamed for everything else. As for the cows he must never go back to a farm in his life. Then the cows will not get upset and confused.
Last year we turned our lights etc off for 1 hour to "save the planet" - 1 day in the year. Well guess what we do this every day during daylight saving. The excepion would be those who think they have to stay up an extra hour. As I have said before, I went to bed at 10 pm before daylight saving, and I go to bed now at 10pm. I'm not falling apart and my "body clock" is not going into spasms. I am, however, enjoying more time outside late in the day.
Many years ago, NSW extended there daylight saving period by 1 month. I don't know the exact figure, but the savings were in the millions($) to the taxpayer. without daylight saving it gets light at around 4.30am. Do the anti daylight saving people get up at this time just cause it's cooler in the morning. In the end there is no more daylight hours and there is very little difference in temperatues, and reading some of these comments, I would say the pro daylight saving people are not in the minority.
If you haven't guessed, I will be voting YES
Posted by OJ Wednesday 29 October, 2008 06:58 PM
Finally, we catch up an hour on the rest of the world. Shame that with all the NIMBY's (not in my back yard) in WA our mind set remains 20 years behind.
For goodness sake, get with the times - vote yes and vote often! Greatest thing to happen to WA since, well, forever! For a state that struggles to attract enough workers, capital and tourists, we need everything going for us we possibly can to make our state appealing. WA desperately needs DLS!
Posted by Mark Wednesday 29 October, 2008 06:16 PM
I dont know why people are so up in the air about daylight savings. How frustrating is it for people who need to contact the Eastern States and have a 3 hours difference. It bl**dy sux. Rushing around to be able to send and/or ring before those businesses close for the day has caused alot of people great issues. I agree with Daylight savings. We need to keep up with the rest of the world. Everyone will eventually get used to it. There is more to hate and loathe in the world...
Posted by Marie Wednesday 29 October, 2008 04:48 PM
I can see this issue from both sides, i can understand that farmers with milking cows would be having trouble adjusting thier cows.
But my point is that i already have to be at work at 7am in the morning so i can do business with the eastern states, it is too much to ask that we keep our country at the same pace across the board???
Posted by Samantha Wednesday 29 October, 2008 01:46 PM
Daylight saving is rediculous - it increases the incidence of skin cancers (hottest part of day is now 5pm when we are told to be out enjoying the extra daylight) but more importantly it increases green house gas emmisions as more people now have big air conditioners on for longer in the day.
Get rid of it fast !
Posted by Alan Wednesday 29 October, 2008 12:07 PM
Well what a lot of drivel... For those complaining about not getting any daylight in the mornings, as you will have noticed before, as summer comes in we will continue to get more daylight earlier in the mornings. If you are tired here's a thought - go to bed! isn't that novel.... I went to bed at 9.30 last night because I was tired and guess what? I went to sleep!! amazing isn't it?!? It's too hot? well guess what - the temperature doesn't increase during daylight saving and it doesn't drastically drop between 8-10pm before the clocks go forward. The only reason people don't like daylight saving is because they are to perocial to be progressive - after all this is WA why should be do things like anywhere else in the world?
Posted by My Say Wednesday 29 October, 2008 11:59 AM
Daylight saving has been around for a long time. Its origin was started by the Romans and the smart countries still use it. How about stopping the referendum and just bring it in!
Posted by Michael Wednesday 29 October, 2008 11:50 AM
Those that want daylight saving are showing that they are lazy and disorganized, and the only way they can get anything done is if the government steps in and gives them an extra hour of daylight in the evenings.
Also, the general opinion of those in support of daylight savings (Suck it up, Get over it, etc) shows their arrogant and insolent attitudes towards society and people with different beliefs to their own.
Well, enjoy your last year of daylight savings guys! Because it wont be coming back.
Muahahahahahahaha!!!

having come from a farming family in NSW, I cant say the wheat or sheep seemed to notice any difference when the clock was put back an hour. We still got up just before sunrise and in bed at the same time form a solar/ lunar perspective. I reckon daylight saving is great.
Posted by Ian Wednesday 29 October, 2008 08:51 AM
how right you are orlane! it is the clock that changes nothing else, so why dont you just get out of bed an hour earlier? it is easy to say go to bed early but why should us non dls change our lifestyle to suit the minority.
you would also be surprised how much of an effect it really does have on the rural life including the cows. farmers work to the sun not the clock which assentually can turn out to two hours lost production (their late start, business early finish). remember where you produce comes from.
in closing, if dls does come in which no doubt it will because of the government arrogance i hope they do the right thing and in 5-8 years time we have a 3 year trial without dls and then another referendum after.
it would only be fair.

Daylight saving is ridiculous, especially when it comes from the politicians who DON'T have children. THEY don't know how hard it is to convince a child to go to bed when the sun's still up and wake them up an hour earlier.

Yes I love it , not sure why people don't , but each to their own I suppose. I will however be very disappointed if it goes. It is so good to have that extra daylight when I am home at night, as I work night shifts some nights and when we do spend time together it is nice for hubby and I to have daylight to share things together.

In regards to the price of the referendum, the following article on PerthNow (Sunday times) says:
It "will cost WA taxpayers $7 million, but would have cost $700,000 if it had been held at [the] state election."

I think Western Australia has enough daylight hours and heat. OUr state is far too hot in the mid summer to have an extra hour of HEAT. After a 40 degree day we are all looking forward to the sun going down and not having to endure another hour of blistering heat. I think if people want daylight saving, just have 2 months, early October to end of December, after that time it is just too hot to enjoy.

I love daylight savings and I love light in the mornings. I am still on the water paddling at 6am. It's light enough to find my way to the water. In the evenings I can go for a walk and not be getting home in the pitch black. Not to mention work. In my job I deal a lot with the eastern states as our head office is in Melbourne. When there is 3 hours difference you lose ability to contact people after 2pm which is only half way through the day. If our computers go down our help desk is only open until 4pm. Too bad if you have something urgent to get done.
Not having daylight savings will only further alienate WA from the rest of the country.

WOW more than 78 pages of comments, this is certainly a hot topic, just like our hot summer. I live in the north of our great state where it gets REALLY HOT. I love to get out and ride my road bike (cycle) but how the hell can I do that if it feels like I'm in hell. The best time to get out is in the morning just as the sun is coming up. So why not just go out an hour later I here you say...because it puts the rest of the day an hour behind. I love my weekends too, its nice to get out at 6 and be fininshed by 9 not 10, half the day is almost gone. Now I don't expect people who have never lived outside the metro area to understand this and you probably think I'm just a sook. But this is a big state and there is more of us in the country than in the city. Apart from that WA is just not the right place for DS, we get enough sun light without it, thats why its been voted out before and will be again. I can't wait till its over.

Can anyone tell me how much it actually costs to have a referendum (including publicity/advertising)?
I'd love this figure to be publicised.
If the people of WA have already voted AGAINST daylight saving (more than once!), how can the pollies justify wasting money on another referendum for it?
Why bother asking us anyway if the result of a referendum obviously means nothing? (Keep in mind the Daylight Saving supporters are about to get their 3rd summer of D.S. despite previous referendum results. It seems we keep getting the answer wrong & have to "sit the test" again till we give the result the pollies want)

OMG Day Light Saving just luv it. All those people complaining about body clocks OMG do they go to bed exactly the same time every night, it is just one hour you have lost one night and hey guess what you can have in back in March. It is so much better for us to have more daylight after work so we can go out after work and school for walks with the family and also sit outside and have dinner with the whole family. The rest of the world can cope OMG get a life and make the most of it. LUV DAY LIGHT SAVING.

I will certainly be voting against dls! We get up in the dark again. Walk the dogs, in the morning darkness. Still have the same after work chores to undertake at home - but now in the daylight!! WA certainly does not need dls - we have the best sunlight hours and are not like overseas!
Even my dogs "body clock" is out of wack!!! They usually wake me at 5am for their walk - now I wake them up for their 4am walk!!! No thank you to dls!!!

I see no basis for daylight savings.
* Lets give the young a chance to vote?
I am in my early 20s and I dont want daylight savings nor do many of my peers of the same age group (Not all the young voters want it)
* We are behind the times and much of europe have adopted DLS??
I have been all over europe and asia for both personal and buisness travel. As such I have experienced daylight savings to its full extent while in the UK for the full 3 months of their summer. The big difference over there is that when they have daylight savings, in the evenings it is under 20°C. Infact the hottest day they had all summer was 25°C (maximum). In Perth its too hot to have daylight savings.
* So its still bright after work and we can go outside?
Believe or not its still bright after work anyway... Lets assume you finish work at 5pm and it takes an hour to get home. So you are home at 6pm... I believe theres still an hour of light even in October? The sun sets at 6:30 but that doesnt mean the light immediately switches off? Theres still atleast a good half hour of light after the sun is gone. And by the time we get to December, sunset is at 8pm (2.5 hours of light)
* DLS lets us excercise!
Hmm... excercise in 40° heat? Wouldnt it be better to do this in the mornings before work where its still in the 20s when the air is also fresher and less polluted and UV radiation is not too bad?
*We save electricity?
Although we save electricity in the form of an hour less of lights, Air conditioners are turned ON an hour earlier. Last time I checked, airconditioners consumed ALOT more electricity than lights. Infact we use MORE ELECTRICITY
*Perth is called dullsville because of no DLS?
I think we are dullsville because there is nothing for tourists to do after 5:30pm or all day sunday... why is that?? OMG!! Its because all the shops close!! We are dullsville because we dont have night or sunday trading!!
* We need DLS because the eastern states have it and we need to communicate with them for buisness???
Did you know that there are other lands outside Australia? Infact WA is a resource contry and who buys most of our resources? OMG its not the eastern states its asian countries (china, japan, etc) and guess what? They are in the same timezone as us!! DLS changes this and makes it more difficult to communicate with them!

Why are people who love DLS so aggressive towards those of us who hate it? As for people who say they have more "quality" time with their families, what did you have before? I will vote no because the sun does not match the clock!! Don't want to eat at 8pm-want my dinner at 6pm!! Glad your gone Mr Carpenter.

I hate daylight savings. It is not healthy for your body clock to
